RB Commit Donnel Pumphrey Named Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year

We would like to congratulate San Diego State Aztec running back Commit Donnel Pumphrey who has been named the Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year. He was the best athlete in the state of Nevada last season. Donnel Pumphrey is an all-purpose back from Canyon Springs High School in North Las Vegas, Nevada and a member of the 2013 football recruiting class. Pumphrey is 5 foot 9 and weights 170 pounds. Donnel Pumphrey held offers from California, Duke, Nevada, New Mexico, New Mexico State, San Diego State, UCLA and UNLV. Pumphrey showed interest in Arizona, Boise State, Oklahoma, Oregon, San Jose State and Utah State. Pumphrey’s commit to San Diego State is strong and we do not see him flipping commitments.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Pumphrey as Nevada’s best high school football player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Football Player of the Year award announced in December, Pumphrey joins an elite alumni association of past state award-winners in 12 sports, including Mark Sanchez (2004-05, Mission Viejo HS, Calif.), Wes Welker (1999-00, Heritage Hall HS, Okla.), Terrell Suggs (1999-00, Hamilton HS, Ariz.), Anquan Boldin (1998-99, Pahokee HS, Fla.) and Jerome Bettis (1989-90, Mackenzie HS, Mich.). The senior running back carried 143 times for 1,296 yards (9.1 YPC average) and 19 touchdowns past season. Pumphrey also caught 12 passes for 114 yards (9.5 YPC average) and one touchdown. Pumphrey also returned two kickoffs and a punt for touchdowns. Pumphreys best game of the year came on the first game of his senior season in which he had 10 carries for 342 yards (34.2 YPC average) and five touchdowns. Pumphrey ends his career at Canyon Springs High School with 3,957 yards rushing and 50 touchdowns (Stats are from Sophomore – Senior Season).
