The first seeded San Diego State Aztecs met the second seeded San Jose State Spartans at the San Diego State Sports Deck on Saturday November 7th, 2015 in front of announced crowd of 872 people. The San Diego State Women’s Soccer team was attempting to accomplish a feat never seen before in the history of the Mountain West Conference. No men’s or women’s team had ever won four straight regular season and post season championships in the 16 year history of the MWC.

The Aztecs jumped on the Spartans early in the match thanks to a goal by Milan Moses assisted by Victoria Barba in the 8th minute of the game. That would be the only goal that San Diego State would be able to muster during regulation. It seemed that the Spartans seemed to control the time of possession during the match which was expected if you watched the Mountain West preview for the game. That really did not matter as the Aztecs defense did a great job of supporting senior goalie Melanie Vaughn. Vaughn had two saves in the half and we did not really her much from her the rest of the game due to how many shots the Spartans had on goal.

The Aztec women were 43 seconds away from making history when the Spartans of San Jose State got awarded a penalty kick in the box off a San Diego State yellow card. The photo above shows the outcome of that kick. The Spartans tied the game and sent the game into overtime. That penalty one could say was a bad call. Many fans did not like the officiating crew. We saw many very hard take downs of players on both sides. This championship game saw a total of 32 fouls of which 21 went towards San Jose State and 11 went towards San Diego State. Also including five yellow cards issued against SJSU and three issued against SDSU. Never in my three years of covering San Diego Flash Pro Soccer have I ever seen more than five yellow cards issued in a game. We should have seen north of 12 yellow cards issued during that game. Ton’s of missed calls went against San Diego State during the game including about five or so handling calls.

But at the end of the day…. The Aztecs had plenty of opportunities to score throughout the game including a huge opportunity during the 2nd overtime period but could not capitalize. San Diego State and San Jose State would remain tied after 110 minutes of play sending the game into penalty kicks. One interesting thing that San Jose State had been doing during the tournament was pulling the goalie for PK’s. While the teams waited for penalty kicks to begin a long stoppage in play occurred. The officiating crew would not allow anyone to be standing behind the goal which included media members. Just another sign that the officiating crew was not really paying attention as people has been there the full game on both sides of the field. San Diego State Men’s Coach Mike Friesen was mad at the officiating crew for the delay and was seen yelling at the officials saying “What goal are we using.”

San Jose State would defeat San Diego State in penalty kicks by a score of 4 to 2. The loss last night means the end of the season for the Aztecs (15-4-1) that had won 11 of their last 13 games. The Mountain West conference is a one bid league for the NCAA tournament. The Aztecs have a very very slim chance to make the NCAA tournament as a at large team.
