Surge fall at home to the Pacific Warriors

The San Diego Surge came into Saturday’s contest vs the Pacific Warriors with a 4-1 record. The Surge are coming off a 7-44 loss to Central Cal which was the first home loss in team history. The following weeks game was canceled making Saturday’s game the first game the Surge have played in 2 weeks. How would the Surge avenge their first ever home loss, let’s find out.

Warriors wasted no time drawing first blood as Priscilla Gardner scored the game’s first touchdown in just a couple of play for a 7-0 Warriors lead with 14:14 left in the 1st quarter. Surge tied the game on a Touchdown pass with 11:11 left in the 1st. Lorie Moore ended the warriors drive with an interception and the game remained tied 7-7 after the 1st quarter.

The Surge took their first lead of the game on a Melissa Strother 31 yd field goal for a 10-7 lead. The lead wouldn’t last long as Gardner continue her path of destruction with another long touchdown run as Warriors took the lead 10-14 with 5:15 left in the 2nd. Surge would narrow the lead to 13-14 with 1:39 left in the 2nd on a Melissa Strother 35 yd field goal. Warriors stuck one more time in the half as Gardner got a 50-yard Touchdown run with 6 seconds left in the half. Surge trailed 13-20 at Halftime.

Surge came out of halftime with some fire. San Diego got the ball first and didn’t take long to tie the game as Gallegos found Clark for 70 yards to tie the game 20-20. The tie wouldn’t last long as Gardner broke more tackles and ran 69 yards for her 4th Touchdown of the game with 11:29 left in the 3rd. The Surge defense got their 2nd Turnover of the game as Sonfre Roberson picked off a floating duck from the Warriors QB. Despite an interception and a few 4th down stops by the Surge defense, the offense couldn’t put anything together and the 3rd quarter ended with San Diego trailing 20-27.

The 4th quarter was entering and had everyone on the edge of their seat, (or the edge their section of the concrete steps of Santana High). Warriors scored first on an 8-yard touchdown run by Gardner, her fifth of the game. The score doubled the Warriors lead to 20-34 with 11:51 left in the 4th. The Surge wasted no time responding as Sarah MgBeike returned the following kickoff 68 yards to the house to cut the lead in half 27-34. Gardner scored her 6th touchdown of the game to give the Warriors a 27-40 lead. The Surge got a much-needed stop late in the game. The Warriors punted the ball and the punt went 4 yards and landed in the hands of a Surge Defensive Line player as the Surge took over at the Warriors 20-yard line with under 2 minutes left. Gallegos connected with Clark for 19 yards for another touchdown cutting the lead to 34-40. San Diego needed an onside kick in order to stay alive. The following kickoff, the Surge recovered the onside kick. The following possession didn’t go well as the Surge failed to pick up a first down and turned the ball over on downs as the Warriors held on to Win 34-40 in the 2nd ever home loss in San Diego Surge history and the Warriors first-ever victory over the Surge.

The Surge travel to Central Cal next week looking to avenge their 7-44 loss in their last meeting, the first home loss in San Diego Surge history. The Surge will play another good running back. The Surge struggled in stopping the run the last time they played the War Angels and are hoping for a better result this week.
