The Olympics being summer or winter bring people together for 2 weeks of athletic competition. Personally speaking as a fan of all olympic sports, the Olympics bring our family members together who love and hate sports. During the three weeks of competition the worlds minds change from politics to sports as we stand united in the Olympic medal race.

The tape delay of the London opening ceremony sparked outrage throughout America. When we take a look at the time the live event was starting in at London: 9:00pm. The live event time for the east coast of America was 4:30pm. The west coast was given a time delayed version of the Olympics starting at 7:30pm. When we take a look the starting times the west coast should have been able to watch the opening ceremonies at 1:30pm (the live time). Why would NBC decide to tape delay the opening ceremonies for the west coast? The answer is money. When you compare TV viewership, early afternoon viewers ship is dramatically lower than primetime at 7pm – 10pm.

During the opening ceremony a lot of people at our party had no clue what was going on, as they had not read up on the opening ceremony. Now coming out of the wood work is a missed part of the opening ceremony paying respects the British men and women who died in the train station bombing.

Britons are also fuming that tributes to victims of the 7/7 attacks were combined in a general memorial, and not given their own moment of silence. Dailymail.co.uk

This portion of the ceremony was edited out for American television audiences. When the pictures of the British killed were shown on TV, NBC edited in an interview with Bob Costas and Michael Phelps. Other nations throughout the world were also out raged that the IOC (International Olympic Committee) would not hold a moment of silence for the 11 Israeli athletes and coaches killed by Palestinian terrorists 40 years ago at the Olympic games in Munich, Germany in 1972.

Despite a petition signed by 100,000 people, including Barack Obama, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) says the ceremony isn’t a “fit setting” to mark the deaths. Those who disagree will make their feelings felt by standing up during the speech by the IOC chief Jacques Rogge. The IOC won’t comment but the suspicion is that they will not agree to the minute’s silence so as not to anger the 50 predominantly Muslim states taking part. news.sky.com

Other small issues have arisen, from the North Korean flags being mixed up with South Korean flag. Brazil expressed their opinion when the ex-president was seen marching with his team.

With all of these things happening during the current 2012 london olympics one form of social media is destroying the Olympics coverage for the west coast. Twitter and the Associated Press. For those of us who follow sports intensely on twitter will being seen the results of the games if we like it or not. The members of the associated press on the east coast tweet without thinking who else could be following them. If they wanted to be respectful of other people they would mark their tweets with SPOILER ALERT. Please Please let us watch the Olympics before we know all of the events and scores. Social Media is growing and becoming the number one form of news.

This tweet is a perfect example of what happens during a big name event. NBC Sports is live tweeting the 10 meter platform synchro diving finals. Guess what ? The west Coast will get to see this tape delayed event at 8pm tonight already knowing the winners.

The only possible way to watch the Olympics for us sports and social media fans is to turn off social networking during the 2 weeks the Olympic events are on. Still mind-blowing are the TV numbers that NBC is picking up, with the time delayed coverage.

An average of 35.8 million people in the last three days have watched the games in prime-time, up from 30.6 million who saw the first three days in Beijing four years ago, according to the Nielsen company. Associated Press Fox News
