Wave shutout Reign 1-0

It took a goal and a big save by Kailen Sheridan in stoppage time, but the Wave has finally defeated the Seattle Reign!

For the match, San Diego (1-0-1, 3 pts) had a slight possession advantage by holding the ball 51-percent of the time. Both Seattle (1-0-2, 3 pts) and the Wave were even on fouls, with SDWFC having nine of the 17 called. Seattle’s Lu Barnes had her name written down in the referees notebook in the 33rd minute for a digrestion.

The first solid Wave chance of the match was in the 27th minute when Jaeden Shaw took a cross from Sofia Jakobsson at the top of the box.  After regrouping, Jakobsson would have a shot of her own.  Neither were good enough to solve Seattle’s Claudia Dickey.

A yellow card was issued to Lu Barnes of Seattle in the 33rd minute.  The foul occurred 19 yards out, at the connection of the box and the arc. Savannah McCaskill had the honor of the free kick and put it just over the top of the crossbar.

In the 40th minute, McCaskill had a golden opportunity of a failed pass by Seattle.  Her shot was nicked by a Reign FC defender and went off the left post.  It had enough spin on it that it would eventually land out of bounds granting SDWFC the first corner kick of the evening.  Sadly for the home supporters, nothing would come from that corner.

In the 85th minute, van Egmond unleashed an attempt from 22 yards out that would’ve effectively ended the match before stoppage time, but Dickey got just enough of her fingernails on it to guide it wide of the post.

Late in the second half stoppage time, Emily van Egmond took a pass from Alex Morgan and with the Seattle keeper moving to her right, shot it in the lower left corner of the net for the lone goal of the match and her first of the young season.
