Now that the summer games are over we can look forward to the 2014 winter games which will be held in Sochi, Russia. Sochi, Russia is a town on the Black Sea. Greater Sochi sprawls for 145 kilometers (90 mi) along the shores of the Black Sea near the Caucasus Mountains.

Sochi has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters  average 11 °C (52 °F) during the day and 4 °C(39 °F) at night in the period from December to March). Yes this is not the warmest temperature for a winter olympics. It has been said that the Russian government has been saving snow under the mountain venues to prevent a lack of snow for the games. They also have around 500 snow machines ready to make snow should their surplus melt.

The winter games in Sochi will be connected by a fast-moving bullet train. The train will connect the speed skating, figure skating, Olympic Village, to the mountain get away were all of the skiing, snowboarding will be held. We wanted to research Sochi to give our readers some inside information and Russia wants to make this event one of the best winter Olympics in history. It appears from information we have read that Russian President Vladimir Putin has already spent over $18 BILLION on their training centers and Olympic venues.

According to Wall Street Journal and people all over the world, one problem that Sochi will have to deal with is security. London was said to have the same problems but pulled off the Olympics perfectly.

Apart from improving the national team, security is perhaps the most serious test. The Black Sea city, population 343,000, is a few hundred miles from Chechnya, Kabardino-Balkaria and North Ossetia, republics in southern Russia’s Caucasus region that have faced violence for years.

Russia and Georgia went to war four years ago over South Ossetia—a territory claimed by Georgia but run by Russian-backed separatists—about 200 miles southeast of Sochi.

In May, Russian authorities said they foiled a terrorist attack on Sochi after seizing weapons and ammunition in Abkhazia, another disputed region a few miles from the coastal Olympic Park. wallstreetjournal.com

Last but not least America’s favorite for snow boarding gold is read to get back out on the slopes. Shawn White told the world on NBC’s Today Show, the International Olympic Committee has added an additional snowboarding event into the winter Olympics. This new event is a trick park. If anyone has ever gone snowboarding or skiing and have seen the down hill runs that have jumps and half-pipes.  This is the new event. Now Sean White can come home from Sochi with two gold medals instead of one gold medal.
