SDSU Football: Rocky Long Will No Longer Punt On 4th Down?
San Diego State Football Head Coach Rocky Long has been in the news a lot lately. Rocky Long is going to be using a new plan this upcoming season when the Aztecs are inside of the 50 yard-line.
Why, this is a common question you might be asking yourself? The answer is simple. The best punter in San Diego State History Brian Stahovich graduated and was picked up by the Indianapolis Colts. The Aztecs don’t have a punter they can count on when the time to punt comes. The Aztecs are going to have some unexperienced punters now and that could hurt them.
“It’s a day-to-day theory,” Long told the SDUT paper. “I haven’t decided because we’re getting a feel for it out here. I just read about this guy, and I don’t know if I can do that because everybody in the world is going to say this is not Football 101, right?
San Diego State has an incoming freshman Seamus McMorrow from Saints has one hell of a leg. He set a San Diego County field goal record of 57 yards. Below is a chart of the San Diego State kicking and punting core.
| Athlete | Home Town | Year | Position |
| Seamus McMorrow | San Diego, California | FR | Kicker/Punter |
| Wes Feer | Chino Hills, California | JR | Kicker/Punter |
| Chance Marden | Fremont, California | SR | Kicker |
| Joel Alesi | El Cajon, California | SOPH | Punter |
Now given that fact that we very possibly could have a freshman punter starting could be very scary for coach Long. Only one punter has punted in the past four years for the San Diego State Aztecs and that was Brian Stahovich.
I am a bit skeptical about coach Long’s new approach to four down. He is making a statement to the opposing team saying my offensive and defense is better than yours and I am cramming the ball down your throat. San Diego State fans will be able to see this new plan inaction during the first Aztec Scrimmage this coming Saturday,
