The San Diego Padres are officially under new ownership. Today the MLB owners approved the sale of the San Diego Padres to the O’Malley group.

Close to the trade deadline the Padres signed San Diego native Carlos Quinten and closer Houston Street to extended deals. On the bigger note, the biggest trading pawn on the Padres Chase Headley remains on the team.

The Padres in recent years have no spent money on the team, and now they have. The new ownership group for the San Diego Padres appears to include former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Peter O’Malley and pro golfer Phil Mickelson. Monday, the new group, reached an agreement to buy the San Diego Padres from John Moores in a deal believed to be at the $800 million mark.

The previous deal by John Moores to sell the Padres in 2009 for $300 million was denied by baseballs controlling ownership. The new deal to sell the Padres to the O”Malley group should pass baseballs controlling ownership during their meeting in mid August.

If the agreement to sell the Padres is finalized by baseballs controlling ownership, Ron Fowler (Chief Executive Liquid Investments), would become the controlling owner. The O’Malley family known for buying the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1950 and moving them to Los Angeles before the start of the 1958 MLB season. Phil Mickelson is one of the best golfers the World has ever placed eyes on. As a child, Mickelson played golf for the San Diego County Junior Golf Association and graduated from the University of San Diego High School in 1988. Currently Mickelson has 48 wins on the PGA Tour.

I have placed three paragraphs into this article to give everyone some Insite into Mr. Fowler. He is an enormous asset to the San Diego Community and will do his best to bring winning baseball to San Diego.

Fowler’s special interest is higher education. He was a primary financial contributor and chaired the successful campaign to create the Entrepreneurial Management Center at San Diego State University (SDSU) and served as the founding chairman of its Board of Governors.  In May of 2005, Ron received an honorary doctorate from SDSU and serves as a member of the Board of Trustees at the University of San Diego.

An avid sports enthusiast, Ron was the owner and managing general partner of the San Diego Sockers professional soccer team from 1987 to 1991. He serves as treasurer and trustee for the U.S. Olympic Training Center in San Diego, chaired the first Mayor’s Task Force that resulted in a new ballpark for the San Diego Padres and served as chairman of the San Diego Super Bowl Task Force and the 2003 San Diego Super Bowl Host Committee. He is a current board member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the San Diego Padres.

As a community and civic leader, Ron received the 1997 Community Champion Award from the San Diego Hall of Champions.  He was also recognized as San Diego’s 1997 “Nice Guy of the Year.” And in 2008, he received the John F. Cade Award from the John M. Morrison Center at the University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business. This annual award recognizes individuals who personify the spirit of entrepreneurship and demonstrate excellence and ethics in the way they conduct business. STTHOMAS.edu
