San Diego State Aztecs held the annual summer family day scrimmage at Cathedral Catholic High School because of tonight’s football game between the San Diego Chargers and the Dallas Cowboys.

It was an extremely hot day at Cathedral Catholic High School with the temperature reading 103 degrees on my car’s thermostat. The Aztecs started off the day with worm ups. Moving on to a very weak special teams showing. This was many Aztec fans first chance to see the San Diego State kicking core and I was not very impressed.  Chance Marden San Diego States first soccer player turned kicker looked like he was in the zone. Based on todays performance I would place Marden at number one in the kicking depth chart. The Aztecs really need to get the punting figured out. My best friend from high school was sitting with me at the scrimmage and is a kicker who has been trying to get onto the Aztec squad. We were analyzing all of the kicks and punts of 35 to 45 years against a Pac 12 return team is not going to cut it. Coach Rocky if you read this sign my boy McCall Penn. He is accurate from 55 yard and in, kicks all kickoffs into the endzone and punts 50 yards.

The first team offense took the field an struggled against the second team defense going three and out on the first drive. The second team offense took over drove 75 yards down the field lead by QB Adam Dingwell and TE DJ Shields. They went for the two point conversion and were successful. The first team offensive took over. Ryan Katz and Colin Locket hooked up for a 75 yard touchdown. The second team offensive then took over lead by running back De’Saan Hardwick who capped off the drive with a touchdown run.

Both squad would throw interceptions on back to back drives. The newly converted defensive (converted from TE) linemen Robert Creighead had a nice interception.

The first team defensive returned their interception all the way to the house for a touchdown. This is when halftime started. The half time was weird. To keep all of the men “warm” the third and fourth teams played during a 15 minute half time period. We saw almost every single San Diego State Aztec quarterbacks receive some snaps. Ryan Katz, Adam Dingwell, Jake Bernards, Chad Jefferies and last but not least Matt Morin.

We got to watch one of the quarterbacks of the future Matt Morin. Matt got a little bit cocky and attempted to juke out a defender. Matt tripped himself fumbled the ball. He was unable to recover the fumble. The defense would take the fumble to the house for 6. This is the point i decided to call it quits at Cathedral Catholic as I started turning into a Lobster. I am going to be posting videos throughout the day and will post them here on this post for everyone to view. The Aztecs have a lot of work to do if they want to be ready for Washington on September 1st.

At the half when I left these were the top performers.  Ryan Katz was 7-15 for 143 yds a TD and a INT. Colin Lockett (3 rec, 90 yds, TD) and Hardwick (7 carries, 76 yds, TD).

The final score at Cathedral Catholic High School SDSU first team defeats the SDSU second team 20 to 8.

First Team Offense First Series

75 Yard TD from Ryan Katz to Colin Locket
