Welcome everyone to the very first edition of Eric’s NFL Bloggin’ Tuesday’s. This blog will showcase information on the NFL including: Reviews of every game, studs and duds of every game, top 5 plays of the week, the power 12 which shows my playoff predictions on a weekly basis and a quick preview/prediction of next weeks games. So let’s get this started!
Seahawks 7 vs. 49ers 13-
In a battle of NFC West foes, the 49ers defense hold strong. While the Seahawks didn’t go away easy, it seemed they took a small step back. After beating the Patriots, one of the most elite passing offenses, and top offense. They allowed 13 against one of the worst pass offenses in the NFL, however to their defense. The 49ers are 5th in total offense.
Studs: Frank Gore, Marshawn Lynch. Both of these backs hit over 100 yards, and that alone against two of the top defenses in the league is pretty good.
Duds: Seattle receiving game. Dropping a lot of Wilson passes in this game, and a few bombs that should have been caught and this game may be totally different. Alex Smith almost was on here. What saved him was that TD.
Titans 35 vs. Bills 34-
Talked about by many, this was the return of Chris Johnson. Though he did play against a horrid run defense of the Bills. The Bills to me are one of the most disappointing teams this year, all that money spent this off-season to boost their pass rush has gotten them 3 wins in 7 tries. The Titans however have turned it around a little bit after starting 0-2. This game was the highest scoring in the NFL this week as it seems the Titans like to be involved in high scoring late game drama.
Studs: Chris Johnson, Matt Hasselbeck, and Fred Jackson. Johnson and Jackson both had their first big games of the season while Hasselbeck showed he still had it as he still is winning games as a back up in a Titans uniform.
Duds: Bill D-line, Kenny Britt and Kendall Wright: The Bills d-line still can’t manage to get their way. 205 rushing yards and just 2 sacks. Meanwhile, the Britt and Wright combo could be pretty deadly, yet it hasn’t. I believe they could be a pretty solid tandem within the next few years if they stay healthy.
Ravens 13 vs. Texans 43-
After their first lost of the season. The Texans were hungry to win this week against one of the biggest teams in the AFC, the Ravens. After going down by a field goal, the Texans came back and scored 29 unanswered points to eventually win the game 43-13. The defense of the Ravens played very bad, it makes you wonder how bad it could have been if Suggs didn’t play.
Studs: The entire Texans team. It’s that simple, they had something to prove and they did so with a dominating win.
Duds: Joe Flacco, Ray Rice, and the entire defense. Flacco says elite, not with that performance. Rice was contained well and the defense could not stop a nose bleed with the equipment and a “How to video.”
Jaguars 23 vs. Raiders 26-
Studs: Sebastian Janikowski and Josh Scobee. These kickers were very accurate and played very well for kicker standards. As they combined for a little more than half of the total score of this game.
Duds: Justin Blackmon. This stuff is getting old, he has barely done anything all year long. The highest WR selected in the draft, while the 2nd round pick in the Supplemental Draft is doing better, his name is Josh Gordon.
Bucs 28 vs. Saints 35-
In this scoring affair, the Saints coming off a bye week and their first win of the year. The Bucs? Losing games still, the same script. The Saints played a great game, but still can not defend the pass. While the Bucs AKA the Jackson’s did work on offense, only to be one bad call shy of tying the game most likely to force OT. It looked good for Buc fans, up 14-0 at home. Looking to go .500, and then there was a strong Brees has the Saints scored 28 of the next 35. The Saints just might have found their groove again.
Studs: Drew Brees, Lance Moore, Vincent Jackson and Josh Freeman. Brees played well in his second straight win as did Lance Moore who exploded for 121 yards on 9 catches. Speaking of exploding, Vincent Jackson obtained 200+ plus yards and a TD, while Freeman hit 400+ passing yards.
Duds: Saints running game and d-line. Again, the defensive line only getting one sack, this coming off a bye week and a pretty good performance against the Chargers. Meanwhile, the Saints only got 81 rushing yards total.
Rams 20 vs. Packers 30-
Starting a bit slow, the Packers hit 30 and gave the Rams thier first home loss of the season. While Greg the Leg kept them in the game with the halftime score being just 10-6, the Packers came out scoring a touchdown and a field goal 3 times in that order. The Rams did score a late touchdown to make the score seem better than it actually was.
Studs: Aaron Rodgers, Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb and James Laurinaitis. Rodgers started hot, though the score did not show this, Nelson played amazing going over 130+ with an amazing TD grab. and Cobb doing it all getting 2 TD’s and 89 yards with a 19 yard rush. Meanwhile on defense, Laurinaitis is quitely becoming an elite linebacker. Second in tackles getting 14 in this game.
Duds: Alex Green. Yes, I know. He’s new and stepping in for Cedric Benson. But still, you’re getting 20 touches and the best you could do is 1.8 yards per carry average?
Browns 13 vs. Colts 17-
This game showcased tons of rookies, Andrew Luck, Weeden, Richardson and Josh Gordon to name a few. However, Luck showed them all as he ran for the Colts’ only touchdowns of the game scoring two TD’s on the ground. The Browns again looked good, it just seems like there is a piece missing. It looks like they can be pretty good, they have a good pass defense with Joe Haden back, a deep threat in Josh Gordon and a QB who isn’t half bad. Plus a young running game. The problem? The coach, you can just tell the GM wants to fire Pat. And lots of Browns fans want him gone as well.
Studs: Andrew Luck and Brandon Weeden. The two rookies played well head to head. Both throwing no INT’s and scoring for a total of 4 touchdowns.
Duds: Trent Richardson. This rookie may have a rib injury, but that is no excuse to perform for 8 yards on 8 tries against a horrible rush defense.
Jets 26 vs. Patriots 29-
In this AFC East division clash, two teams tied for first faced off for the right to be in first place. While the Patriots–behind Tom Brady and their special teams–took an early lead. However, it was wiped away thanks to the poor New England pass defense. After what looked like to be the field goal that tied the game, the Patriots gave the ball right back on a fumble on the kickoff. Though many Pats fans thought it was all done. The Jets only got a field goal and had to send their defense out and Brady led not one, but two clutch drives to kick two field goals. One in regualtion and one in OT that proved to be the game winner.
Studs: Mark Sanchez, Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski and Jeremy Kerley. Sanchez and played a good matchup. However, Brady’s clutch drives at the end is what got him on this list. Meanwhile, the Gronk and Kerley led each team in yards.
Duds: Patriots pass defense. The never ending script continues, this defense looks worse. But looking at the stats, they’ve improved.
Cardinals 14 vs. Vikings 21-
After an impressive 4-0 start, the Cards seem to go back down the drain after losing 3 straight games. That team is young, and could be one to compete in the next 2 to 4 years if they develop right. The Vikings are the same way, and in fact are impressing many. 5-2 and 4-0 at home. The Vikings also have done it on defense, without any TD’s from Peterson. He went 5 games with no touchdown until this past week. Beware of those Vikes! You heard here first.
Studs: Adrian Peterson, Daryl Washington Andre Roberts and LaRod Stephens-Howling. Both backs rushed for over 100 yards and a TD against pretty strong defenses. While Roberts yet again out performed Fitz.Washington also had the most tackles for the Cards, and got two sacks.
Duds: Christian Ponder, Larry Fitzgerald, Percy Harvin. Ponder had just a grand total of 58 passing yards and 2 INT’s while Fitz 4 catches for 29 yards. Harvin made of had a TD, but that doesn’t save him after just having 30+ yards on 4 catches.
Redskins 23 vs Giants 27-
In RG3’s first game against the defending champ New York Giants. He held up well, enough to hold it tied at the half 13-13. Especially after losing Fred Davis for the season. Through turnovers, the Redskins couldn’t go up like they wanted too. Though Griffin had a clutch drive late, Manning had a big throw to Cruz for a touchdown that would seal the deal for the Giants. Who knows what happens if the Redskins didn’t turnover the ball so much as they did.
Studs: Robert Griffin III, Victor Cruz, Alfred Morris, Eli Manning and the Giants defense. The two quarterbacks put up a great fight, though the defense kinda decided this one. Cruz had another great game. From being a no body to winning the Super Bowl. Speaking of a no body, same goes for Alfred Morris who has been a sleeper who came out of no where. And the Giants defense may have given up 23 points, but they did contain Griffin pretty well compared to other teams.
Duds: Ahmad Bradshaw. Bradshaw just seemed upset the entire game, you could see it on the sidelines. Something has to be bothering him, and it may have hurt his performance. I know his foot is banged up, but still.
Panthers 14 vs. Cowboys 19-
In the game that had tons of potential, the Cowboys and Panthers didn’t really live up to any hype. Newton again played bad compared to last year, and you can tell now his moral has taken a huge blow. The Cowboys did find a way to win without any help from Dez Bryant and DeMarco Murray as the Panthers yet again had the chance to win, but their head coach CALLS A TIMEOUT ON A 4th DOWN PLAY IN WHICH THE PANTHERS CONVERTED AND “WON” THE GAME ON. No wonder why Cam is so upset.
Studs: Miles Austin, Dan Bailey, Luke Kuechly and the Cowboys o-line. Austin did lose a fumble, however he did get the only TD for the Cowboys, Bailey scored the rest and the ‘Boys’ o-line held pretty good allowing zero sacks. Luke led the game with 15 tackles.
Duds: Felix Jones, Dez Bryant and the Carolina coaching staff. Felix looked good last week, that being said, Felix looked bad this week. Dez…same story. And the Carolina coaching staff needs to re-think. Calling a timeout before a clutch 4th down, is like icing the kicker. As the ESPN Monday Night crew would say “Come’on MAN!”
Bengals 17 vs. Steelers 24-
In this underrated rivalry, the Steelers looked to gain some ground on the AFC North in hopes of beating Andy Dalton’s Bengals, they were right. The Steelers seemingly said to the Bengals “You can’t beat us” as it seemed they were teased a few times. Though I thought the game was a bit boring and too many stops, one thing that was funny was Sanders faking his injury, only to come back the next play and down the ball inside the 10.
Studs: Vontaze Burfict and Jonathan Dwyer. WHO? Exactly, this 2 players led the way for their teams. Burfict led with 15 tackles, Dwyer rushed for over 120.
Duds: A.J Green, Mike Wallace. Two elite WR’s who did next to nothing. Tons of drops by Wallace and Green was pretty much kept in check all day.
Lions 7 vs Bears 13-
Finally, the Monday night game. The Bears physically dominated the game, locked down Calvin and took early control. And kept that control forcing more turnovers and limiting the Lions to a TD in garbage time. Cutler did take a nasty hit from Suh, but that’s normal. Nothing else much to say other than the Bears took over from the start.
Studs: Bears defense, Matt Forte, Brandon Marshall. The Bears D again forced many turnovers, Forte did some damage, though did not get in the endzone and Brandon Marshall stole the show from Calvin Johnson in the showdown among the elite WR’s in the league.
Duds: Calvin Johnson. Locked down all game and only catching 3 balls for his long just being only 11. Charles Tillman could be turning into an underrated shut down corner.
