SDSU Basketball: 11/1/12 Preview CSUSM Basketball
The San Diego State Aztecs will meet the Cal State San Marcos Cougars Thursday night before a sold out crowd at Viejas Arena on the Campus of San Diego State University. The San Diego State Aztecs are ranked 20th by the AP to start of the season. This is perhaps the most hyped team in SDSU history even more so than the 34-3 team two years ago. The night before the Aztecs and Cougars take the court we still do not know the starting five for this deep San Diego State squad.
Everyone is going to see the Aztecs new freshmen Winston Shepard, Matt Shrigley and Skylar Spencer get a lot of minutes due to the new NCAA rules on red-shirting. Previously freshman were not allowed to take to the court during the short NCAA preseason. If the freshman received playing time in either of the preseason games they would lose their red shirt. This season the NCAA has changed the rule given above to allow freshman to play in the preseason without losing their red shirt seasons. SDSU Coach Steve Fisher has said this offseason these freshman are so good we don’t quite now who will red shirt. We will however now after the upcoming preseason games vs. Cal State San Marcos and UCSD who will be red-shirted their freshman season or not. The San Diego State Aztecs met the Cal State San Marcos Cougars (CSUSM) last year for the first time in history. The CSUSM Cougars basketball has only been around for one season. This team finished its first season 19-12 and were the A.I.I. Conference runners-up. That is not bad at all for the teams debut season.
The Cougars played SDSU externally hard last season for their first ever basketball game losing to the Aztecs 78-63. The Cougars have some heigh on the roster in freshman Quincey Lawson (6’6), freshman Ali Langford (6’7), freshman Adam Eakles (6’8) and senior Kelly Lord (6’10). The shortest player on the CSUSM team is senior Hakeem Washington at 5 foot 11. The height will be good practice for SDSU as they struggled against North Carolina State in the NCAA tournament due to the high differential. We do know that Cal State San Marcos is going to help San Diego State prepare for the game against Syracuse by running the zone against SDSU for the first half of the game.
Unfortunately the game will not be televised. The only way to listen to the game is on the radio on 600 KOGO.
