The Security+ certification offered by CompTIA was originally developed in 2002. It became nationally accredited in 2007, along with the A+ certifications offered by CompTIA and the Network+ certifications offered by CompTIA as well. This type of certification is normally held by individuals that are employed as systems administrators, security engineers, or security specialists.

A Security+ certification is considered to be an elective type of certification that can be used in place of different Microsoft certifications. It is one of the four choices that individuals are able to choose from when attempting to pursue an IAT Level II certification to work for the Department of Defense. Obviously, pursuing this type of certification will help you get your foot into the door of some high paying jobs.

The exam covers a variety of specialized topics. The topics that are covered on this examination are all topics that security professionals will need to be aware of. The topics include network security, security threats and other types of vulnerabilities, cryptography, along with identity management.

Individuals that possess a Security+ certification are typically employed by major companies that work directly with the government. These companies include Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, and many other industries that exist around the globe.

Most of the examinations that are offered by CompTIA are graded on a sliding grade scale of 100 to 900, while a few of the certifications may be graded up to 1000. There are still a few certifications offered by CompTIA that are graded on a Pass/fail sliding scale.
