San Diego State Upsets Kansas 61-57
No. 21 San Diego State took down No. 16 Kansas 61-57 on Sunday afternoon at Allen Field House in front of 16,000 screaming fans. The loss to San Diego State was the Jayhawks first loss home loss against a non-conference opponent in more than seven years (68 games to be exact). The victory for San Diego State added another win onto the winning streak when leading with five minutes remaining in the game. The streak now stands at 104 straight victories when leading with five minutes remaining in the game.
Kansas decided to put the game into the hands of perhaps the Mountain West’s Non Conference MVP Xavier Thames by fouling. Thames hit both free throws to push the lead back to 59-56. Of course all Aztec fans know the one man on the team who should have the ball with time running out should be Xavier Thames. Kansas at this point received the with under 20 second’s remaining and a the question came into everyone’s head. Do the Aztecs foul Kansas or do they give Kansas a chance for the three ball? This was a flashback moment to the University of San Diego game. When the Aztecs fouled and USD had the chance to win and thankfully missed the game winning three. The Aztecs did foul and however Kansas missed the first of two free throws. Now back to Xavier Thames. Kansas took too much time to figure that out as they would foul Xavier Thames once again giving Thames a chance to put the game away for good. Xavier would make the last two free throws of the game. Thus, giving San Diego State a 61 to 57 upset victory over Kansas at the Allen Field House.

San Diego State far more active and hungry thus far. Not intimidated. Bunch of kids who just go out and play hard.

San Diego State and Kansas will have to wait two seasons for a rematch. Contract with San Diego State was set up with Kansas returning to San Diego in 2015-16. Our player of the game award goes to starting sophomore Skylar Spencer! He was a huge factor with 13 points, 9 rebounds and 6 blocks. Spencer got help from Aztec teammates Josh Davis who had 10 points & 14 rebounds and Xavier Thames who finished with 16 points (four points in the last-minute). Kansas was out played by the more athletic San Diego State Aztecs. The Aztecs who are the best team in the nation when it comes down to defensive field goals forced Kansas to shoot 29.8 % (that’s 17/57). “They’re one of the premier teams that we have played this year…. This is a hard place to win.” – KU coach Bill Self on San Diego State.
