The Charger’s backfield has been plagued with unfortunate injuries this season. Donald Brown’s concussion leaves his return to the field for Sunday’s game questionable, Ryan Mathews is out indefinitely rehabbing a knee injury, and Danny Woodhead’s fibula injury has him out for the season. This left undrafted rookie Branden Oliver and seasoned player Shaun Draughn as the only remaining (healthy) runners for the Charger’s roster.
At least, that was the case, until Tuesday. On October 7, San Diego took action to help support the remaining members of their backfield roster by signing Ronnie Brown, who was released by the Texans last week (after having appeared in three games). Prior to his time with Houston, he played for the Chargers during the 2012-2013 seasons. In order to make room for Brown, San Diego waived linebacker Kevin Reddick.
Ronnie Brown’s knowledge of the Charger’s offense is an undeniable asset, and the depth that he’ll bring to the running back position welcome. Brown is familiar with the team and the system, which should make his reintroduction to San Diego relatively seamless.
