Rivers vs. Manning: A Quarterback Quick Draw

This Thursday, the top two teams in the AFC West will face off in an epic quarterback quick draw. The Chargers are recovering from an unanticipated loss to Kansas City, while the Broncos are embracing a 3 game win streak. Denver’s most recent victory was also coupled with Manning’s history-making 509th touchdown pass–which you could theoretically be unaware of (I don’t know your life)–suggesting that the Bronco’s will come into Thursday’s game with some residual momentum. There’s no doubt that this match will prove pivotal for both teams and their captains.

San Diego has all of the right ingredients to beat Denver. Last year, Rivers lead his team to a 27-20 victory over the Broncos, proving that the Chargers know how to capitalize on their strengths. San Diego has significantly improved their defensive game over the season, and currently have the No. 3 pass defense in the NFL. Rivers himself has also been giving an MVP worthy performance this year, and ranks in the top five for completion percentage, touchdowns and passing yards. In order to upset Manning and his team, the Chargers are going to have to play to the top of their game offensively and defensively; there’s no room for a half-assed attempt Thursday night.

Denver is not the same team they were a year ago, and the improvements that they’ve made defensively will no doubt put some pressure the Charger’s offensive line. Additionally, with San Diego starting their fourth-string tailback, the Bronco’s defense will likely direct much of their attention to Rivers. Peyton Manning is on a roll, and has been playing at the top of his game. Slowing down Manning is not impossible, but the Charger defense (which ranks fifth in the NFL) will no doubt have their work cut out for them here.

When the top two competitors in a division battle for the top slot, it’s always worth watching. Both quarterbacks are performing at optimum levels this year, and each team has improved both their offensive and defensive games in the past year.
