Celebrating 13 years of San Diego Sports Domination
Thursday, June 28th, 2012, San Diego Sports Domination was born on the campus of San Diego State University. The idea for San Diego Sports Domination (SDSD) was conceived after we had been let go from the FanSided.com network (Covering San Diego State). We wanted to continue covering the teams that we love and had invested our fandom in. Last but not least, the San Diego Union Tribune had just put in place on June 21st, 2012, a pay wall, forcing sports fans to pay for the paper. We determined as a group that San Diego needed a website devoted to covering San Diego Sports in-depth with no cost to our readers.
Over the past 13 years, San Diego Sports Domination has had the honor and privilege to cover a multitude of San Diego-based sports teams and we have won multiple awards for our coverage of San Diego sports. SDSD have been guests on many radio and TV sports shows, CBS 8 San Diego, ESPN 1700 San Diego, Mighty 1090, NBC 7 San Diego, SB Nation Podcasts, Talk Now San Antonio (ESPN), Xtra Sports 1360, and many more. SDSD have also hosted three podcasts covering the San Diego State Aztecs, the San Diego Chargers, and the San Diego Padres. Our San Diego Chargers podcast Chargers Domination Live, spawned the podcasting careers of two amazing people, David Droegemeier and Daniel Wade. David and Daniel hosted Chargers Domination Live for six years. After tens of thousands of views/listens and the Chargers moving to Los Angeles, David and Daniel moved on to Locked On Chargers. One of the largest podcasts on the web talking LA Chargers Football as they have amassed over 13,800 subscribers on YouTube. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the third member of the Charger Domination Live team, John Kegley. John joined the United States Army in March 2021. John, thank you for your service to our nation.

San Diego Sports Domination has also helped to launch multiple careers in both sports and news. Olivia Sandusky, a former D1 softball athlete at the University of San Diego, gained reporting experience covering Albion SC Pros in the National Premier Soccer League. SDSD connected her with Albion, and she did stand-up interviews for Albion SC Pros social media. Olivia is now an Emmy award-winning news anchor for NBC Palm Springs. Scott Koppenhaver covered San Diego State Baseball on social media for us. Scott is now a senior manager of social content at the NFL. John Matthew Harrison, a very talented wedding photographer, wanted to break into the world of sports photography. We gave him the chance to photograph San Diego sports on our credentials. John is now a team photographer for the San Diego Legion (Major League Rugby) and photographs for International Sports Images (ISI). I (David Frerker) Founder of San Diego Sports Domination am now a full time sports photographer. I work as a freelance photographer for Imagn Images, affiliated with USA Today Sports and run David Frerker Sports Photography.
Over the years, San Diego Sports Domination has covered San Diego sports history. We have covered teams that no longer exist, Albion SC Pros (NPSL), Oceanside A team (ABA), North County Battalion (NPSL), San Diego Breakers (PRO Rugby), San Diego Chargers (NFL), San Diego Flash (NPSL), San Diego Hornets, San Diego Rage, San Diego Sealions (WPSL), San Diego Silverbacks, San Diego Surf (WPSL) and San Diego Surf (ABA). We continue to cover San Diego Legion, San Diego Mojo, San Diego FC, San Diego Seals, San Diego Strike Force, and San Diego Wave. The majority of our coverage has been moved to Instagram via David Frerker Sports Photography. We are, however, beginning to bring our coverage back online.
San Diego Sports Domination has had the honor over our 13-year history to partner with some really cool brands. We have worked with Bellator MMA, Dove Just For Men, Petco, America’s Best Racing, Delaware North Sportservice, Staples, and AT&T, to name a few. We are members of the Cision (PR Database) press list and have worked with some of the biggest PR Firms in the world. On average, we receive over 30 pitches per day on an assortment of sports topics.

Let’s get more analytical and dive into the data. San Diego Sports Domination has been read in over 180 countries around the world. Our content has garnered over 840,000 views! Our top four referrers are Facebook (over 300,000 views), search engines (100,000 + views), Instagram (50,000 + views), and X (over 30,000 views). We have been able to amass a following of over 14,400 people between SanDiegoSportsDomination.com and all of our social media accounts.
During our first seven years in operation, we managed a total of 250,000 views. An average of about 36,000 views per year. Sports Blogging takes a ton of work. We need to be current with the news and our coverage. 95% of articles don’t have a long shelf life. They are valid leading up to the game, but not years down the line. You get what you put in. So we decided to ask our community in December of 2018 what type of content they wanted to see. Our community decided that they wanted to see more photographs. Instead of seeing just the photographs used in the articles, they wanted to see the full photo gallery. Within the first three years, we saw MASSIVE NUMBERS. Our content received over 470,000 views, an average of 150,000 views a year. We then hit a wall with technology and how many GB of photos we could have on our site.
I always say that you get out of San Diego Sports Domination what you put into San Diego Sports Domination. We have had a loyal group of writers and photographers over the past 13 years. They (31 individuals) have contributed 23% of our total content, consisting of over 1,700 articles. I have carried the majority of the workload by contributing 77% of our total content by publishing over 1,300 articles and photo galleries. We have uploaded over 22,000 sports images to San Diego Sports Domination.

In 2021, I got really into sports photography using San Diego Sports Domination as my outlet to get into events. From 2021 to 2024, I photographed an average of 150 to 200 sporting events in San Diego per year. In 2022, I drew the attention of Sports San Diego (San Diego Sports Commission), which is the team behind the DirecTV Holiday Bowl and the Rady Children’s Invitational. The DirecTV Holiday Bowl is one of the nation’s top bowl games, featuring elite teams from the Pac-12 Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The Rady Children’s Invitational is a new men’s NCAA Division I college basketball tournament held during Thanksgiving weekend. In 2023, I drew the attention of Imagn Images. Imagn is affiliated with USA Today Sports. Since becoming a freelance photographer with Imagn, I have had the pleasure of photographing various professional sports, including Major League Baseball (MLB), Major League Soccer (MLS), the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), and the National Basketball Association (NBA). I have since spent the majority of my time building David Frerker Sports Photography.
Going forward in 2025, my goal for San Diego Sports Domination is CONTENT CREATION. Let’s get back to posting more content. Content from events that I cover using San Diego Sports Domination. I am currently working on editing a photo gallery from the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup games played at Snapdragon Stadium. When San Diego Wave returns from the international break, we will resume posting game photo galleries. We will keep you guys up to date with the San Diego Strike Force playoff run. I might begin writing articles on sports photography and incorporate more articles with YouTube content that we are creating.

What would you like to see from San Diego Sports Domination going forward? I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for your support over the last 13 years. Thank you for giving my writers and me a place to talk about sports in San Diego. Last but not least, THANK YOU for being part of our community. Here is to another 13 years of SAN DIEGO SPORTS DOMINATION!
