SDSU Basketball: No. 25/23 SDSU Defeats SDC 91-57 (Game Recap)

The San Diego State Aztecs tipped off the 1st home game of the 2012 season against San Diego Christian at a sold out (12,414) Viejas Arena on the campus of San Diego State University. Being at the game in person we could tell that the crowd did not have 12,414 and it was not even close. We are sad that a good amount of season ticket holders did not attend the game. Please if you have tickets please attend the games and lets not let Viejas Arena look half full during sell outs like last season.  (We are stating people buy season tickets so they can see the big games IE UNLV, UNM,).

The Aztecs came out of the on fire. The Aztecs made a shot with in the first minute of the game giving the whole student section free tacos from Rubio’s Fish Tacos. The Aztecs pulled out to an 8-5 lead after the first two minutes of the game. This was possibly one of the better first half’s of Aztec basketball that I have seen in a long time. The Aztecs are so exciting with their height and agility. The Aztecs were putting on a dunk and block clinic tonight. The Aztecs played a lot better against San Diego Christian then they did last Sunday against Syracuse. This is a short highlight that CEO David Frerker took at the game.

Statistics portion of our post game breakdown. The Aztecs only committed 12 turnovers that equals one half against Syracuse on the U.S.S Midway. The Aztecs did have issues once again with free throws 9-19 (47.4%) in the first half, 14-20 (70%) in the second half and shot 23-39 (59%). The best free throw shooter on the team in the game against San Diego Christian was Jamaal Franklin who shot 7-10 (70%) and Chase Tapley who shot 4-4 (100%). The team leader in rebounds was Jamaal Franklin (12), DeShawn Stephens (8) and following close behind in third was Chase Tapley and Dwayne Polee II both with 2 rebounds. The Aztecs out rebounded San Diego Christian 45 to 36. The player of the game for the Aztecs against San Diego Christian was Jamaal Franklin with 28 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks and 3 steals. That was Franklin’s 14th career double-double and 7th double-double with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds!

This is what San Diego Christian head coach Tim Cook had to say about the San Diego State performance against his squad.

“I’ve played them three times as a coach. They are the most athletically gifted and as talented as I’ve seen out of the three (times) that we’ve played them. They have all the makings to make a deep run in the conference and in the NCAA tournament. I think if the outside shots go in, it’s going to be really hard to beat them because that’s really the only thing that’s a little inconsistent with them right now. Everything else is on full. I don’t think that you can look at that Syracuse game as indicative because it was outside. They are going to have to play someone like that deep in the tournament, but I think there’s going to be a different outlook when they play inside.”
