SDSU Basketball: No.25/23 SDSU at. Missouri State (Game Preview)
The No. 25/23 San Diego State Aztecs will meet Missouri State Saturday afternoon (1:00 p.m. CT) as part of the Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge on the campus of Missouri State in Springfield, Missouri. The Aztecs come into Saturday’s game as the favorites to blow out this young Missouri State squad. The players to watch in Saturdays game are Jamaal Franklin and Chase Tapley. Jamaal Franklin is coming off a huge game against San Diego Christian where he put up 28 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks and 3 steals. Chase Tapley is also coming off a huge game against San Diego Christian where he put up 18 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks and 3 steals.
The Aztecs are still trying to improve with shooting from the floor and behind the arc. The Aztecs shot 50.8% from the floor and 21.1% from behind the arc. This team has a plethora of shooters and can blow out teams when they are all on. The Aztecs have also been working harder this season on offensive and defensive rebounds. Saturday’s game will show a lot about how this Aztec team conducts business when on the road. This is the Aztecs first road game of the season with the new freshman and the transfers. How the Aztecs come out in the first half against Missouri State will show a lot about how this team will play on the road this season.
The San Diego State Aztecs are ranked 25th by the AP after the Aztecs loss to Syracuse (Battle On The Midway). This is perhaps the most hyped team in SDSU history even more so than the 34-3 team two years ago. The Aztecs starting five for Saturday’s game will be Xavier Thames, Chase Tapley. Jamaal Franklin, JJ ‘O Brien and DeShawn Stephens. Once again the only San Diego State freshman who is red-shirting this season is Matt Shrigley. Look for Skylar Spencer to receive a lot of minutes in the upcoming game. Winston Shepard has been suspended for violation of NCAA rules. The Aztecs have appealed the suspension and are hoping to receive information about the appeal before they head to Missouri.
The Bears have some height on their team with Bruce Marshall (6-10), Christian Kirk (6-7), Drew Wilson (6-7) and Gavin Thurman (6-6). The shortest player’s on the MSU team are Tomie Aromona (5-10) and Anthony Downing (6-1). The height will be good practice for SDSU as they struggled against the Syracuse 2-3 zone due to the height difference. The taller the teams the Aztecs play the more prepared to the Aztecs will be when they face USC’s Dewayne Dedmon (7-0), James Blasczyk (7-1) and Omar Oraby (7-2).
The Aztecs and Bears last met in the 2007 NIT and SDSU won that game 74-70 to advance to play Syracuse for the first time.
