The Aztecs are still trying to improve with shooting from the floor and behind the arc. The Aztecs are shooting 36.8% from the floor and 15.3% from behind the arc. This team has a plethora of shooters and can blow out teams when they are all on as all Aztec fans have seen. The Aztecs need major improvement in the free throw game but have improved their free throw shooting average 56.1%. The Aztecs have also been working harder this season on offensive and defensive rebounds. The Aztecs have shown how much work pays off in the rebounding game as the Aztecs are out rebounding their opponents 141 to 115.

The San Diego State Aztecs are ranked 25th by the AP Top 25 and 25th in the USA Today coaches poll .This is perhaps the most hyped team in SDSU history even more so than the 34-3 team two years ago. The Aztecs starting five for Wednesdays game will be Xavier Thames, Chase Tapley. Jamaal Franklin, JJ ‘O Brien and DeShawn Stephens. Once again the only San Diego State freshman who is red-shirting this season is Matt Shrigley. Look for Skylar Spencer to receive a lot of minutes in the upcoming game. Winston Shepard has been suspended for violation of NCAA rules. The Aztecs have appealed the suspension and lost. This is game three of the three game suspension for Winston Shepard.

The Golden Lions have some higher on their team with Trent Whiting (6-6), Mitchell Anderson (6-7) and Davon Haynes (6-8). The shortest player’s on the UAPB squad are Tevin Hammond (6-0) and Kyle Jones (5-10). The taller the teams the Aztecs play the more prepared to the Aztecs will be when they face USC’s Dewayne Dedmon (7-0), James Blasczyk (7-1) and Omar Oraby (7-2). The Aztecs and Golden Lions last met during the 2008-2009 season and SDSU won that game 93-61. Cool fact: The last time the Golden Lions came to San Diego State the basketball arena was named Cox Arena.
