The No. 23/21 San Diego State Aztecs will travel to the Wooden Classic at the Honda Center (18,336) in Anaheim, California to battle UCLA Saturday night. The Aztecs will enter the game on Saturday night as favorites against UCLA. The players to watch in Saturdays game are Jamaal Franklin and Chase Tapley. Jamaal Franklin enters the game against UCLA averaging 18.6 points, 10.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists in five games this season. Chase Tapley enters the game against UCLA averaging 11.8 points, 5 rebounds and 1.6 assists in five games this season. The numbers do not tell the full story about Chase Tapley as he was unable to play against USC due to injury.
The Aztecs are still trying to improve with shooting from the floor and behind the arc. The Aztecs are shooting 38.7% from the floor and 26.7% from behind the arc. This team has a plethora of shooters and can blow out teams when they are shooting their best as they did at the beginning of the game against USC and the full game against Arkansas Pine Bluff. The Aztecs need major improvement in the free throw game but have improved their free throw shooting average 59.3%. The Aztecs have also been working harder this season on offensive and defensive rebounds. The Aztecs have shown how much work pays off in the rebounding game as the Aztecs are out rebounding their opponents 223 to 194 an average of about 44.6 to 38.8 rebounds per game.
The San Diego State Aztecs are ranked 25th by the AP Top 25 and 25th in the USA Today coaches poll .This is perhaps the most hyped team in SDSU history even more so than the 34-3 team two years ago. The Aztecs starting five for Saturday’s game will be Xavier Thames, Chase Tapley (James Rahon is Tapley is unable to play). Jamaal Franklin, JJ ‘O Brien and DeShawn Stephens. Once again the only San Diego State freshman who is red-shirting this season is Matt Shrigley. Look for Skylar Spencer to receive a lot of minutes in the upcoming game. Spencer played extended minutes in the game against USC and finished with 2 points and 11 rebounds. Winston Shepard will also be a player to keep your eye on as he will take on his nemeses from high school Shabazz Muhammad. Shepard had Muhammad’s number in high school and is looking forward to defeating Muhammad again at the NCAA level.
The Bruin’s have some height on their team with Kyle Anderson (6-9), Tony Parker (6-9), Joshua Smith (6-10), Sooren Derboghosian (6-10) and Adria Gasol (6-10). The shortest player on the Bruin team is Aubrey Williams (5-8). The Aztec’s and Bruin’s met was 1991 with the No. 3 Bruin’s coming away from the San Diego Sports Arena with a 84-64 win. The last time the Aztec’s beat the Bruin’s was on December 7th 1940.
New Roster Information UCLA
Junior Guard Tyler Lamb (6-5) has left program (Transfer)
Junior Center Joshua Smith (6-10) has left program (Personal Reasons)
Freshman Center Tony Parker (6-9) injured will not play against SDSU.
UCLA is now down to seven scholarship players and four of them are freshmen. Because UCLA has now lost its height advantage they are going to be running the 2-3 zone against SDSU.
