The No. 17/15 San Diego State Aztecs will host Texas Southern University at a sold-out Viejas Arena (12,414) on the campus of San Diego State. The Aztecs will enter Monday night’s game as strong favorites against TSU. The players to watch in Monday’s game are Jamaal Franklin and Chase Tapley. Jamaal Franklin enters the game against TSU averaging 20.2 points, 10 rebounds and 2.8 assists in six games this season. Chase Tapley enters the game against TSU averaging 11.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in five games this season.
The Aztecs are still trying to improve with shooting from the floor and behind the arc. The Aztecs are shooting 40.4% from the floor and 29.7% from behind the arc. This team has a plethora of shooters and can blow out teams when they are shooting their best as they did against Arkansas Pine Bluff and UCLA.The Aztecs need major improvement in the free throw game but have improved their free throw shooting average to 62.3%. The Aztecs have also been working harder this season on offensive and defensive rebounds. The Aztecs have shown how much work pays off in the rebounding game as the Aztecs are out rebounding their opponents 254 to 228.
The San Diego State Aztecs are ranked 17th by the AP Top 25 and 15th in the USA Today coaches poll. This is perhaps the most hyped team in SDSU history even more so than the 34-3 team two years ago. The Aztecs starting five for Sunday’s game will be Xavier Thames, Chase Tapley. Jamaal Franklin, JJ ‘O Brien and DeShawn Stephens. Once again the only San Diego State freshman who is red-shirting this season is Matt Shrigley. Look for Skylar Spencer to receive a lot of minutes in the upcoming game along with fellow freshman Winston Shepard.
The Tigers have some height on their team with Fred Sturdivant (6-7) and De Angelo Scott (6-7). The Tigers also have an extremely small team that should easily be out rebounded by the San Diego State Aztecs in Ethan Blackwell (5-7), Stephen Bedford (5-9), Raymond Penn (5-9) and Omar Strong (5-9). I am not sure if the Aztecs and Tigers have ever met before as not stats or videos come up when we search past games. The player to keep an eye on from TSU is their starting PG Omar Strong who loves to shoot the three.
