SDSU Basketball: No.17/15 SDSU 84 vs. UCSB 70 (Game Recap)

The San Diego State University Aztecs had a small crowd on hand for the game against UC Santa Barbara. The starting five for San Diego State tonight were Jamaal Franklin, DeShawn Stephens, JJ O’Brien, Chase Tapley and Xavier Thames. The Aztecs came out shooting on fire and then cooled off. The Aztecs started the game on a 18 to 5 run against the Gauchos. San Diego State started the game against UCSB on a 21 to 9 run (first 8 min of the game).
The Aztecs were led on the run by transfer JJ O’Brien who had 6 of the 21 points. The San Diego State Aztecs were doing a great job to draw fouls 7 fouls in the first 11 minutes of the game. The best player on the UCSB team had to sit out of the game just three minutes in after drawing 2 personal fouls. The Aztecs ended the first half shooting 17-28 (60.7%) from the floor, 6-8 (75%) from beyond the arc and 6-8 (75%) from the free throw line. The Aztecs were able to hold a 46 to 29 lead over UCSB at halftime. The offensive players of the half for SDSU were Rahon, O’Brien, Tapley, Thames and Franklin all ended the first half with 8 points.
Chase Tapley sparked on fire making three straight 3 pointers scoring 13 points just five minutes into the second half of the game. UCSB came out of the break ICE cold. Aztecs went on a 20 to 8 run seven minutes into the second half of the game. Michael Bryson is the first player of the game to foul out at 9:40 mark in the second half. The foul on Bryson was the 15th foul of the game by UCSB. Trent Brown became the second UCSB player to foul out of the game on the 18th foul of the game by UCSB. That foul really hurt the Gauchos as they were on a 12-0 run. Kyle Boswell was the Gauchos player of the game with 23 points. UCSB’s Allen Williams fouled out with 2:12 remaining in the game on foul #24 of the game.
The Aztecs ended the game shooting 29-52 (55.8%) from the floor, 11-17 (64.7%) from beyond the arc and 15-21 (71.4%) from the free throw line. The player of the game for SDSU was Chase Tapley who scored 23 points. San Diego State now has won 27 straight wins against teams in California, 10th straight win against the Big West and 8th straight win against UCSB.
