The No. 18/15 San Diego State Aztecs will host University of San Diego at a sold-out Viejas Arena (12,414) on the campus of San Diego State. The Aztecs will enter Saturday night’s game as favorites against USD. San Diego State has won the last eight meetings against cross town rival USD. The players to watch in Saturday’s game are Jamaal Franklin and Chase Tapley. Jamaal Franklin enters the game against USD averaging 19.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.25 assists in eight games this season. Chase Tapley enters the game against USD averaging 13.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists in seven games this season.
The Aztecs are still trying to improve with shooting from the floor and behind the arc. The Aztecs are shooting 42.9% from the floor and 34.8% from behind the arc. This team has a plethora of shooters and can blow out teams when they are shooting their best as they did against Arkansas Pine Bluff, UCLA and UCSB.The Aztecs need major improvement in the free throw game but have improved their free throw shooting average to 65.5%. The Aztecs have also been working harder this season on offensive and defensive rebounds. The Aztecs have shown how much work pays off in the rebounding game as the Aztecs are out rebounding their opponents 318 to 285.
The San Diego State Aztecs are ranked 18th by the AP Top 25 and 15th in the USA Today coaches poll. This is perhaps the most hyped team in SDSU history even more so than the 34-3 team two years ago. The Aztecs starting five for Saturday’s game will be Xavier Thames, Chase Tapley. Jamaal Franklin, JJ ‘O Brien and DeShawn Stephens. Once again the only San Diego State freshman who is red-shirting this season is Matt Shrigley. James Johnson the Aztec transfer from Virginia will be eligible for the game. Look for Skylar Spencer, Winston Shepard and Dwayne Polee II to receive a lot of minutes in the upcoming game.
The Toreros have some height on their team with Chris Manresa (6-9), Simi Fajemisin (6-10) and Dennis Kramer (6-11). The smallest player on the USD team is Christopher Anderson (5-7), Jordan Bickerstaff (5-10) and Therone Tillett (5-11). The Toreros also a mediocre sized squad that will be easily out rebounded by the very talented Aztec squad.
The last time the Aztecs and Toreros met last season at Jenny Craig Pavilion and the Aztecs came away with the 74 to 62 victory over USD. Below we have the highlight video from that matchup between USD and SDSU.
