SDSU Basketball: No.15/14 SDSU vs. Wyoming (Game Preview)
The No. 15/14 San Diego State Aztecs will travel to Laramie Wyoming to take on a very tough Wyoming Cowboys team. The Aztecs will enter Saturday night’s game as favorites against Wyoming. The players to watch in Saturday’s game are Jamaal Franklin and Chase Tapley. Jamaal Franklin enters the game against Wyoming averaging 18.4 points and 10.1 rebounds in 16 games this season. Chase Tapley enters the game against Wyoming averaging 15.2 points and 3.4 rebounds in 15 games this season.
The Aztecs will remember last season’s battle with Wyoming. The Aztecs are hoping for an easy plane flight into Wyoming and don’t want to have to deal with another long ordeal like last season. The Aztecs are still trying to improve with shooting from the floor and behind the arc. The Aztecs are shooting 44.5% from the floor and 34.7% from behind the arc. This team has a plethora of shooters and can blow out teams when they are shooting their best as they did against Arkansas Pine Bluff, UCLA, UCSB and the first half of the Colorado State game. The Aztecs need major improvement in the free throw game but have improved their free throw shooting average to 67.6%. The Aztecs have also been working harder this season on offensive and defensive rebounds. This is the number one weakness of San Diego State. San Diego State have been out-rebounded in the past two games by UNLV and Colorado State. The Aztecs have shown how much work pays off in the rebounding game as the Aztecs are out rebounding their opponents 629 to 585.
The San Diego State Aztecs are ranked 15th by the AP Top 25 and 14th in the USA Today coaches’ poll. This is perhaps the most hyped team in SDSU history even more so than the 34-3 team two years ago. The Aztecs starting five for Saturday’s game will be Xavier Thames Chase Tapley. Jamaal Franklin, JJ ‘O Brien and DeShawn Stephens. Once again the only San Diego State freshman who is red-shirting this season is Matt Shrigley. Look for Skylar Spencer, and Winston Shepard to receive a lot of minutes in Saturday’s game.
The Cowboys have some height on their team with Leonard Washington (6-7), Larry Nance Jr. (6-8), Derek Cook Jr. (6-9), Austin Haldorson (6-9) and Matt Sellers (6-10). The smallest players on the Wyoming team are Derrious Gilmore (5-10) and Jack Bentz (6-1). The Cowboys have a good-sized squad that will put up a fight on the boards against a talented Aztec squad.
