The No. 25 San Diego State Aztecs will travel to Reno Nevada to take on a very tough Nevada Wolf Pack team. The Aztecs will enter Wednesday night’s game as favorites against Nevada. The players to watch in Wednesday’s game are Jamaal Franklin and Chase Tapley. Jamaal Franklin enters the game against Nevada averaging 20.8 points and 9.0 rebounds in four conference games this season. Chase Tapley enters the game against Nevada averaging 12 points and 2.5 rebounds in four conference games this season.
This is the first match up between the Aztecs and Wolf Pack since Nevada joined the Mountain West Conference. The Aztecs are still trying to improve with shooting from the floor and behind the arc. The Aztecs are shooting 38.4% from the floor and 28.6% from behind the arc. This team has a plethora of shooters and can blow out teams when they are shooting their best as they did against Arkansas Pine Bluff, UCLA, UCSB and the first half of the Colorado State game. The Aztecs need major improvement in the free throw game but have improved their free throw shooting average to 72%. The Aztecs have also been working harder this season on offensive and defensive rebounds. This is the number one weakness of San Diego State. San Diego State have been out-rebounded in the past three games by Colorado State UNLV and Wyoming. The Aztecs have a ton of work to do in the rebounding game as the Aztecs have been out rebounded in Mountain West Conference play so far 144 to 164.
The San Diego State Aztecs are no longer ranked in the AP after the back to back losses to UNLV and Wyoming. The Aztecs are ranked 25th in the USA Today coaches’ poll. The Aztecs starting five for Wednesday’s game will be Winston Shepard, Chase Tapley. Jamaal Franklin, JJ ‘O Brien and DeShawn Stephens. We do not know how bad Xavier Thames back is at the moment. Because he sat out against Wyoming we are going to assume the Aztecs sit the star point guard again. Once again the only San Diego State freshman who is red-shirting this season is Matt Shrigley. Look for Skylar Spencer, and Winston Shepard to receive a lot of minutes in Wednesday’s game.
The Wolf Pack have some height on their team with Jerry Evans (6-8), Cole Huff (6-8), Kevin Panzer (6-9) Richard Bell (6-9) and Devonte Elliott (6-10). The smallest players on the Nevada team are Keith Fuetsch (6-0) and Deonte Burton (6-1). The Wolf Pack have a good-sized squad that will put up a fight on the boards against a talented Aztec squad.
