SDSU Baseball: SDSU vs. USD (Series Recap)

Local cross town rivals San Diego State and University of San Diego met up this past weekend at the newly constructed Fowler Park. The new field cost $13 million and will be used to play future NCAA Division 1 tournament games. San Diego State went over to Fowler Park with only one thing in mind. To crash the party during the opening weekend of Fowler Park. The San Diego State Aztecs did just that and more. The Aztecs overwhelmed the 12th ranked (preseason) Toreros at the opening weekend of Fowler Park by sweeping the three game series.

The Aztecs won game one of the series by a score of 8-1. 

The two stand out players from game one for San Diego State were Tim Zier who had three hits and three RBI’s and Brad Haynal who had three hits and two RBI’s. Zier and Haynal combined for five of the eight run’s SDSU scored against USD. The Aztecs would have a masterful day at the plate with 14 hits and eight RBI’s! The Aztecs ended the game with a team batting average of .368 and eight RBI’s. The Aztec pitching staff of Michael Cederoth and Justin Hepner combined for 11 strikeouts and one earned run over the course of nine innings. The Aztecs held USD to a team batting average of .207 (6/29) and only one RBI.

The Aztecs won game two of the series by a score of 4-2.

The two stand out players from game one for San Diego State were Tim Zier who had two hits and two RBI’s and Ryan Muno who had three hits and one RBI. Zier and Muno combined for three of the four run’s SDSU scored against USD. The Aztecs would have a masterful day at the plate with 10 hits and four RBI’s! The Aztecs ended the game with a team batting average of .256 and four RBI’s. The Aztec pitching staff of Philip Walby, Ethan Miller and Bubba Derby combined for eight strikeouts and two earned runs over the course of nine innings. The Aztecs held USD to a team batting average of .166 (10/30) and only two RBI’s.

The Aztecs won game three of the series by a score of 5-3.

The two stand out players from game one for San Diego State were Tim Zier who had one hit and two RBI’s and Tyler France who had two hits and one RBI. Zier and France combined for three of the five run’s SDSU scored against USD. The Aztecs would have a good day at the plate with eight hits and four RBI’s! The Aztecs ended the game with a team batting average of .242 and four RBI’s. The Aztec pitching staff of Ryan Doran, Travis Pitcher, Justin Hepner and Bubba Derby combined for nine strikeouts and three earned runs over the course of nine innings. The Aztecs held USD to a team batting average of .257 and only one RBI.

Overall the San Diego State baseball team showed that this season could be very magical. The Aztecs pitching staff is off to the best start since legendary Aztec Stephen Strasburg was on the mound as an Aztec. The Aztecs have a few players that are off to very fast starts. One of those players you can find in all three of the short game recaps, Tim Zier. Tim Zier is off to a great start batting .429 (6/14) four of those six hits coming as singles and two doubles. Zier has driven in seven runs to lead the Aztecs after three games. Greg Allen is also off to an extremely fast start leading the team in batting average .538 (7/13) with six of those hits coming as singles and one double. Allen has only one RBI to date. San Diego State is now ranked 22nd by the College Baseball Poll after the sweep of University of San Diego.
