SDSU Baseball: Aztecs Headed to LA
The four-team (UCLA is the No. 1 seed, Cal Poly is No.2, USD is No. 3, and SDSU is No. 4.), double-elimination regional will be played at Jackie Robinson Stadium from Friday, May 31 through Monday, June 3 (if necessary). No. 3 USD will face No. 2 Cal Poly at 2pm on Friday and No. 4 SDSU and No. 1 UCLA will face off at 6pm Friday. This is the first time in the history of the tournament that both SDSU and USD have made it during the same season.
The Aztecs enter the NCAA Tournament with a record of 31 wins and 29 losses. The Aztecs started off the Mountain West Conference (MWC) Tournament with a big 15 to 6 victory over Air Force. The next day the Aztecs lost 6 to 3 against UNLV. The Aztecs had their backs against the wall as the MWC Tournament is a two-game elimination series. The Aztecs then went on to defeat Fresno State on their own turf by a score of 4 to 0 and defeated UNLV by a score of 6 to 2. The Aztecs then went up against the No.1 seed and tournament favorite New Mexico and won by a score of 8 to 7 to force a second Championship game. The Aztecs upset the University of New Mexico in the MWC Tournament Championship game this past Sunday by a score of 9 to 4.
The victory by the Aztecs in the MWC Tournament Championship game this past Sunday gave the Aztecs their second NCAA birth under head coach Tony Gwynn. The last time the Aztecs made tournament play they had the best pitcher in school history Stephen Strasbourg on the squad (2008-2009 season).
