USD WOMEN STILL PERFECT
By Chris Davis
ALCALA PARK — With apologies to the SDSU Aztec men’s team, the real basketball story in San Diego this year has been the USD women’s team as they chase perfection. They now stand at 14-0.
Five Toreros (3-0 WCC) reached double-figures led by Amy Kame who had 23 points in 30 minutes of action. The 23 points for the Senior Guard is nine points above her season average and is a new season high. She also tied her career high with seven assists.
The Toreros jumped out to a 6-5 advantage at the first media timeout. USD was in control throughout the game, but the only thing that they were not in control of was their fouls. Between the 15:51 mark and the 6:51 mark in the first half the Toreros committed six fouls, mainly the hand checking variety. The Toreros lead at intermission by a 40-33 score with Felicia Wijenerg scoring eight points over a 2:24 stretch in the first half. In the second half, it was even worse as during a 4:36 stretch USD was whistled six times.
Saint Mary’s (12-2, 2-1 WCC) saw its five game winning streak snapped and their road isn’t going to be any easier as they travel to BYU (12-2, 2-1) on Saturday. Pacific (6-7, 1-2 WCC) comes into the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Saturday after defeating BYU in Provo by a 75-62 score.
