San Diego State Releases 2014/15 Men’s Basketball Schedule
I personally believe that this schedule is very very easy for the San Diego State Basketball team. For a team that should be ranked in the top 10 nationally this season I would have liked to see a harder schedule for the Aztecs leading into what will be a rather easy Mountain West Conference season. The Mountain West Conference is going to be weaker this season than some past seasons. At this very moment only two programs (SDSU & UNLV) are competing for first place. The two best teams this year are far superior to all of the other teams in the Mountain West Conference. Below I have compiled a list of RPI’s (The Rating Percentage Index, commonly known as the RPI, is a quantity used to rank sports teams based upon a team’s wins and losses and its strength of schedule) so you can see how hard of a schedule San Diego State will be playing. The average RPI for the 10 schools listed below is 172.
- Cincinnati RPI #22
- BYU RPI #38
- Utah RPI #83
- Washington RPI #102
- San Diego RPI #146
- Long Beach State RPI #168
- CSUN RPI # 251
- California State Bakersfield RPI #279
- Ball State RPI #311
- UCR RPI #320
Extremely Early Top 25 Polls:
- USA Today Sports: SDSU Ranked 15th (LINK)
- CBS Sports: SDSU Ranked 13th (LINK)
- NBC Sports: SDSU Ranked 9th (LINK)
- ESPN: Honorable Mention (LINK)
Now after comparing the hardest teams (Cincinnati, BYU, Utah and Washington) that San Diego State will play during non conference how many of those teams are getting any national attention in the early Top 25 rankings. The answer is zero. Both Utah and BYU are only listed once as a possible honorable mention.
Fan Opinion
These arguments come from our group called the “Official SDSU Basketball (Student Run) Fan Page.” on Facebook. This is the biggest San Diego State Basketball group on Facebook.
Jonny Brown: The schedule isn’t weak but the home games are! Utah is the only solid game. I think its disappointing for the fans who pack out Viejas. The fact that Utah is at 1pm too means some people might not be able to make it. Not rewarding enough for the fans.

First off, I like the blog. Keep up the good works guys!
Second, I thought they had a home and home series with Kansas? I think what could help are overall seeding in the NCAA is how we do in Hawaii aka beating U of A.
But I agree pretty weak non-conference.
Thank you for supporting our website! Yes. San Diego State and Kansas agreed to a home & home but the second part of that deal is to be played next season. So Kansas will be coming into Viejas for the 2015/16 season.
To answer your second question. Yes. Beating Arizona would be a huge RPI bump for San Diego State. As part of the preview I did not add in what the RPI would be like near the end of the tournament as we don’t know which teams will be playing in it.
Yes. Our weak non-conference schedule I believe will hurt us going into March Madness. People will continue to say SDSU never plays anyone.
