After a thrilling runner up conference finish to eventual national champion UCLA in 2013, the SDSU men’s club water polo team looks to start the 2014 season with a chip on their shoulder. This weekend (10/11-10/12), the club water polo season officially begins with SDSU taking on 2011-2012 national champion USC. The Aztecs upset USC twice last season with each match being decided by one goal. SDSU and USC enter Saturday’s match with a national ranking of 10th and 5th, respectively. This will be the first game of the season for both teams, and arguably the best game of the tournament.

Next, the Aztecs take on UC Irvine who did not field a team last year. In recent years UCI has been a middle to lower end team in the Pacific Coast Conference, but with a new team, it’s hard to know for certain.

SDSU’s last game of the tournament will feature Long Beach State, who the Aztecs handily beat twice last season. However, it was the Beach’s first year as an organized club, and they claimed two impressive wins over Cal Poly and UCSD. I expect them to be a wild card in the conference.

Come out and support your men’s club water polo team, this year looks to hold a lot of promise.

SDSU vs. UCI-1:10 pm @ SDSU Aquaplex

Sunday 10/12

SDSU vs. Long Beach State-2:20pm @ UCSD Canyonview Pool
