SDSU Basketball: 2014/15 Season Preview (Freshman).
Breaking down the 2013/14 recruiting class
The 2013/14 recruiting class (Kevin Zabo, Trey Kell, Zylan Cheatham & Malik Pope) may turnout to be the best recruiting class in San Diego State History. However, we will not get to see these four men out on the court for sometime. Steve Fisher gave the following injury reports at last Tuesday’s press conference.
Zylan Cheatham had surgery in September and is expected to be out 3 to 4 months. Malik Pope has not played basketball in the last 18 months due to breaking his leg two times. His status is up in the air.
An addition note on Pope
- Malik Pope is listed at 6’10 on GoAztecs.com but is closer to 7 foot 1 or 7’ foot 2 depending on how you measure his flat top hair cut.
Winston Shepard came into San Diego State as the highest ranked recruit in the history of the University. He know’s the type of pressure that freshmen fall under. At the press conference a member of the local media asked Shepard how good the freshman class is and the normal fan will love this answer. The fans who follow the team or follow our website closely know just how good the recruits are.
“The freshman class is better than advertised. Trey Kell and Kevin Zabo are a lot better than people think.” – Winston Shepard.
Lets guess the Aztecs starting 5
I have provided some sample starting 5 rosters for San Diego State. According to one of my many sources one of these 6 options is the actual starting 5 as chosen by the San Diego State Coaching staff. Please remember that the starting 5 is subject to change due to injury. But after a few weeks of practice five men have stood out to the SDSU coaching staff.

I’ll go with C for now. From what I’ve been reading, I don’t think Zabo or Chol will start right out of the gate. So it comes down to whether Kell will start (version A) or Quinn (C). I think Fisher and staff will go with the experience of Quinn. If the frosh force their way into the starting lineup, so be it!
And Steven you would be correct! From what I have been told Chol will be our 6th man and the first man off the bench. Zabo should be our 3rd string point guard. As you said it will either be Quinn or Kell running the point.
Maybe I’ve been a little too hard on AQ in some of my FB posts. He has skills, for sure. And he plays the kind of defense that this team requires. I’d like to see more leadership from him in setting up his teammates, and maybe some improvement from behind the arc (better than 35 percent). Ultimately, I think that if Kell comes into his own on offense this year, he’ll get more minutes. The shot is definitely there for him. This team will have some nice depth once all the freshman are up and running!
Trust me when I say this. Our Freshman have arrived and are here for good. For AQ to see starting minutes he needs to have improved over the summer. Kell is the best offensive point guard that we have on our team. One of the ways that they have been training our guys is by saying………. you need to score 20 points on our defensive. They play hardcore and out of all of our point guards Trey is the best scorer on our defense.
Great news!
Yes it is! The sky really is the limit for this squad!
