Steve Fisher signs 3-year extension with SDSU!
Steve Fisher came to Montezuma Mesa the year after the San Diego Padres last World Series appearance way back in 1999. San Diego State basketball was horrible compiling 13 losing seasons out of their last 14 seasons. Since taking over the horrible SDSU Basketball Program Fisher has taken SDSU to four National Invitational Tournaments and eight NCAA Tournament appearances (two Sweet 16 appearances). Since 1999 Fisher has had eight 20 win seasons and two 30 win seasons.
As a fifth year senior at SDSU I can look back and say in the past five years Steve Fisher has built a dynasty at SDSU. During my five years at San Diego State Steve Fisher has a remarkable record of 141 wins and 36 losses. No Mountain West Program comes close to that win number put up by Fisher. Fisher is also the longest tenured coach in the Mountain West Conference. I was also able to see Fisher win his 300th game as the Head Coach of the Aztecs Men’s Basketball Program on January 31st, 2014 against Colorado State University.
Looking back into time San Diego has never been a basketball city as documented by the Clippers moving to Los Angeles. Fisher has worked very hard to get the prominent business owners in San Diego to support basketball and to support San Diego State. Fisher has even managed to get prominent alumni from the University of San Diego to buy into his program. During Fisher’s press conference he said “This is a job that everyone should say, ‘That’s a destination job.” Fisher was also asked if he would serve out the duration of the contract. Fisher responded that he is feeling good and he talks to Angie after the conclusion of each season about returning the following season. Near the conclusion of the press conference Steve Fisher was asked if Head Coach In Waiting Brian Dutcher would stay behind him for another three years or if he would leave to accept a head coaching job at another university. Steve Fisher responded, “Teams have come to the Mesa to recruit Aztecs Head Coach In Waiting Brian Dutcher but he has decided to stay.” I do believe when Fisher decides to call it quits he will return to San Diego State as a special advisor to the Aztecs Men’s Basketball Program.
I can remember the time when I could go get a basketball ticket 20 minutes before the start of the game and be able to sit in the front 10 rows of the show. Now it is impossible to get a ticket 20 minutes before a game unless you have ton’s of money or someone who is willing to give you a basketball ticket. San Diego State now has a state of the art jam center being built that will the Aztecs Basketball Programs relevant for many years to come. It is safe to say Fisher as turned San Diego into a basketball city and San Diego State into the best basketball program on the west coast along side of the University of Arizona.
San Diego State University Head Coach Steve Fisher is extremely loved by his family, friends, players and fans. I went through the San Diego Sports Domination archives and found a few photos that echo that sentiment. His fans love him so much that we all were freaking out last night when the announcement of the press conference was issued. Now with the signing of his contract extension we are all relieved.
