The Aztecs are still trying to improve with shooting from the floor and behind the arc. The Aztecs are shooting 40.4% from the floor and 28.7% from behind the arc. The Aztecs need major improvement in the free throw game but have improved their free throw shooting average to 61.5%.The Aztecs have also been working harder this season on offensive and defensive rebounds. To date the Aztecs have out rebounded opponents this season 547 to 510. San Diego State’s opponents are averaging a field goal percentage of just 36.9% and 27.2% from beyond the arc.The Aztecs have been bringing massive press on opponents this season thanks to a very deep bench. This has allowed the Aztecs to use the full court press for a majority of every game. Opponents also have to practice playing against the Aztecs dreaded 1-3-1 zone.
The Lobos have some height on their team with Devon Williams (6-8), Tim Williams (6-8), Jordan Goodman (6-9), Joe Furstinger (6-9), J.J. N’Ganga (6-10) and Obij Aget (7-1). This Lobo squad should easily be able to out rebound the Aztecs team on the defensive glass. The player to watch in Tuesday’s game for new Mexico is Deshawn Delaney. Delaney enters the game against SDSU averaging 13.7 points and 6.1 rebounds this season.
This is a must win game for the San Diego State Aztecs. They need to split the series this season with the Lobos if they hope to defend their Mountain West Regular Season title. The Aztecs come into this game after losing their 47 game winning streak against California school’s 59-57 to Fresno State. The good thing for the Aztecs is that they are undefeated at home this season (9-0) and have not lost at home since January of 2013 (UNLV) to a Mountain West Opponent. The bad news for the Aztecs is the fact New Mexico is coming into this game after defeating the ranked Colorado State Rams. The Lobos are coming into Viejas Hot and the Aztecs are in the middle of a cold streak. The good news for San Diego State fans is that they have responded from its last 13 losses with a win and has gone 57 consecutive games without losing two straight.
