San Diego Surf vs. Arizona Scorpions Highlights (1/24/15)
This is a short recap of the San Diego Surf game against the Arizona Scorpions. The game was supposed to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. but was delayed a half an hour because the refs went to the wrong location. Prior to this past Saturday’s game the San Diego Surf had held their games at Miramar College and due to fan suggestions they moved the venue closer to the heart of San Diego at San Diego High School. The game started out very fast for the Arizona Scorpions as they went on an a 9 and 1 run. The game would start to get out of hand as the players would start chirping at each other and at the refs. The coaches included started yelling at the refs for what they thought were bad calls. During the second quarter of the game Arizona Scorpion Jesse Childs got into it with San Diego Surf’s Bill Freeman and both were awarded technical fouls. Those technical fouls would cancel each other out and play would resume.
The Surf were closing in on the Scorpions at the end of the third period as the score stood at 75 to 87. Keep in mind that the San Diego Surf never had a lead in this game. The Surf did a horrible job in the final quarter in terms of using their timeouts. With eight minutes left in the game the Scorpions had increased their lead to 20 over the San Diego Surf. The Surf had ZERO timeouts remaining for the last eight minutes of the game. At the under four-minute media time out the Scorpions still held a 20 point lead over the Surf. During the next series the Surf would begin to unravel. While going for the ball San Diego Surf’s Bill Freeman pushed one of the Scorpions into the scorers table in which I was seated one row behind. It’ looked like an accident but the ref did not feel the same. Freeman was issued his second technical foul of the game and was ejected. He was asked to leave the arena by the officiating staff. The damage to the Surf was done. The lead by the Scorpions was insurmountable due to the fact they had about four minutes left with no timeouts. The Surf would win the last four minutes of the game scoring 13 points and only allowing 10. The Arizona Scorpions would hang on to win 120 to 103 over the San Diego Surf.
Overall, I had a fun time covering my first ever ABA game. The game was also called on KCR College Radio a San Diego State Radio Station. You will be able to follow my social media updates at all of the remaining San Diego Surf games.
