SAN DIEGO — The Aztecs were not very nice hosts to Texas Tech as they shut out the Red Raiders 9-0 in front of 568 fans at Tony Gwynn Stadium at Charlie Smith Field.

Steven Pallares, Ty France, Andrew Brown and Chase Calabuig all had multiple hits in the contest for San Diego State (15-3).

Bubba Derby (2-1) took care of things on the mound as he went eight innings, striking out 11 Red Raiders (12-5) with only 108 pitches. Five of the eight innings Derby got Texas Tech to go down in order. No runner made it past second base all night.

State got the scoring started early. In the bottom of the first with bases loaded, Seby Zavala grounded into a double play, but a run did come in. Brown got one of his hits along with an RBI when Danny Sheehan touched home plate to push it to 2-0.

In the fourth, DH David Hensley singled to center to lead the inning off. Calabuig singled to short left to get Hensley to second. Spencer Thorton laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up 90 feet. Second baseman Alan Trejo torched a curve ball to the right center field gap all the way to the late Tony Gwynn’s memorial banner to bring in both runners. Pallares was subsequently hit by a pitch on his left bicep to earn the free pass to first base. Sheehan pushed both runners up as he loaded the bases with a walk. France singled through the left side to easily bring home Trejo. Pallares had to slide to the outside portion of home plate with an unconventional rolling slide to avoid the tag and score to plate the fourth run of the inning and move the score to 6-0.

Two innings later, Texas Tech brought in Quinn Carpenter. Carpenter came into the game with an 11.25 ERA (5er/4ip) over two appearances. His outing on Friday certainly didn’t help his ERA. As the Aztecs went walk, single, steal second, sac fly, sac fly, single, single, passed ball, walk, RBI walk, ground out. For those that don’t want to figure it out, the Aztecs batted around scored three runs on three hits, three walks a passed ball and a stolen base. Carpenter’s ERA now stands at 14.40.

The two teams will be back at TGS on Saturday (March 14) with first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
