“Corey is a consummate team player who goes about his work in an unselfish manner,” said Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco. “His preparation and dedication to the game and the Chargers has been evident since day one. Corey is talented, tough and durable, and plays a very important role in our defense. This extension is another reflection of our commitment to investing in our core players and homegrown talent.”

“Corey is hard-work personified,” said Head Coach Mike McCoy.  “He will do whatever it takes to get better and help the team.  And he’s still improving.  There’s no limit to how good he can be.  He has a lot of great football ahead.”

“I want to thank the Spanos family, Tom Telesco and all my coaches for helping to make this extension possible,” said Liuget. “This is a dream come true. The Chargers are the only team I’ve ever wanted to play for since they drafted me and my number-one goal now as it has always been is just to continue to prepare and play at a high level to show them how much I appreciate their confidence in me.”

The Chargers’ first-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, Liuget logged 202 tackles, 18 sacks, 49 tackles for loss and four forced fumbles during his first four seasons. He has done so while appearing in 63 of a possible 64 regular-season games during that time, missing the only game of his career as a rookie in 2011. Dating back to that 2011 season, the Miami, Florida native has played in 61 straight games and started 52.

In 2014, Liuget led the defensive line in tackles (65), while leading the team in sacks (4.5), tackles for loss (19) and quarterback pressures (18). He also tied for the team lead in forced fumbles (two) and ranked second in quarterback hits (18). Liuget even scored the first touchdown of his career on a fumble recovery during a game on December 20 in San Francisco.

Liuget was San Diego’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2012.
