The San Diego County Fair, Albertsons, Vons, SDG&E, and the San Diego Chargers will support the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank for ‘Food Bank Day’ at the fair on Friday, June 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Chargers players Corey Liuget, Nick Novak, Tenny Palepoi, and David Johnson will be on site at the walkway to the Family Funville area of the fair to sign autographs and play toss with children. Albertsons Vons will offer $5 pre-filled bags of food for fairgoers to donate to the Food Bank for its School’s Out, Hunger’s Not Summer Food Drive which is sponsored by SDG&E and the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation.
Albertsons Vons will have 1,000 $5 pre-filled bags of food, and are asking the community to support the Food Bank by donating the bags. An SDG&E truck will be on site for donors to “stuff the truck” full of bags that will be delivered to the Food Bank’s warehouse in Miramar following the event.
SDG&E and the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation are supporting the Food Bank’s School’s Out, Hunger’s Not Summer Food Drive throughout the month of June to ensure that the Food Bank has the resources it needs to feed the thousands of families with children in San Diego County who will rely on its services.
Over the summer months, food drive donations to the Food Bank drop dramatically, but demand for food assistance soars with thousands of low-income school children no longer receiving free or reduced-priced school meals thus forcing unemployed and low-income parents to turn to the Food Bank for help feeding their children.
“The work the San Diego Food Bank is doing in our community is commendable and we are honored to support their goals and mission this summer,” Mitch Mitchell, vice president of external and state governmental relations for SDG&E.
The School’s Out, Hunger’s Not Summer Food Drive will run throughout June at all San Diego County Albertsons and Vons supermarket locations. And the Food Bank is encouraging the community to support the food drive by donating pre-filled $5 food bags which include some of the Food Bank’s most-needed food items including: canned tuna, canned vegetables, spaghetti, canned tomatoes and canned soup. After purchasing the pre-filled food bags, customers are invited to place the bags in the Food Bank’s famous red food drive barrels at the front of the store. The goal of the food drive is to bolster the Food Bank’s food supply to meet the increased need over the summer.
The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank has served San Diego County for 38 years and works in partnership with 330 nonprofit partners including soup kitchens, shelters and food pantries in communities throughout San Diego County. Hunger-relief nonprofits receive food from the Food Bank throughout the year, and during the summer months they experience a rise in demand when children are on vacation from school. The Food Bank currently serves more than 370,000 people per month in communities throughout San Diego County through this network of nonprofits and its own direct food distributions.
“Albertsons, Vons, SDG&E and Sycuan have been outstanding long-term supporters of the Food Bank, and their help this summer will shore up our food supply so we can meet the spike in demand from families with children who are living in poverty,” said Jim Floros, president & CEO of the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank.
“There is always a focus around the holidays, but the reality is the Food Bank needs food 365 days a year. Our goal is to help the Food Bank when they need it the most, over the summer months, when thousands of San Diego County school children are no longer receiving free school meals,” said Jenna Watkinson, manager of external communications and community relations, Albertsons Vons.
