LINDA VISTA  (8/25/2015)— It was a battle of heavyweights on Tuesday as two of the top five teams met at USD’s Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The World’s top ranked team Brazil was in a USA Volleyball Cup match against World ranked No. five, the home town kids, United States of America.

Two nights prior, Brazil won the first game in the four game series at Long Beach State’s Pyramid, three sets to two.

This was the first time in recent memory that any National volleyball team has played in San Diego, after the 1988 Olympics the National teams moved out of Balboa Park and moved their headquarters to Colorado Springs and the Olympic Training Center there.  The Men’s National team however trains most of the time not in Colorado Springs but right up Interstate 5 in Anaheim.

The two squads were trading points through the first technical timeout when it was 8-8.  Four points later, it was 12-8 in favor of the Brazilians.  The Americans would not get any closer the rest of the set.

In the second set, the Americans got out to the early lead only to see Brazil come back and tie it at eight, before passing the Red, White and Blue to take a 12-9 advantage before a comeback attempt by the USA.  That comeback stalled and Brazil took a 15-12 lead.  The JCP certainly was full of Americans showing their colors proudly.

The final set had some drama as the USA rallied from down six to come within two points.  However, it was Brazil’s height that made sure that they would win.

The Americans will travel to Japan in just a couple of weeks for the World Cup and the first opportunity to qualify for the 2016 Olympic games.  But first on the agenda is to finish this series against Brazil.  Matches will be tomorrow at USC’s Galen Center and then on Saturday at UC Irvine’s Bren Center.
