The three players to look out for would be QB Maxwell Smith, RB Donnel Pumphrey and WR Eric Judge. Smith, the Kentucky transfer, has completed 19 of 40 passes for 236 yards and one touchdown. Pumphrey has had 40 carries for 147 yards and one touchdown. So far this season Judge has 4 receptions for 82 yards..
- San Diego State’s offensive line will play a major role in how this game is played. They played sloppy against California last week. We could once again see San Diego State use two quarterbacks but I would expect Rocky to only play Smith as the Aztecs offense slowed down against California when they changed quarterbacks.
The San Diego State defense is going to tell us who wins this game. The Aztec defense has forced seven turnovers (6 Interceptions and 1 Fumble) in the first two games of the season. They will be going up against good passing attack. The Aztec defense will need to hold out strong if they want to win this game. I have no doubt that the San Diego State defense will be able to shut down the South Alabama rush game it is the passing game that has me worried. I think this will be a high scoring game. The defense that comes away with the most take aways will win the game.
Special teams will play a huge role in this game. The edge this week will defiantly go to San Diego State. Here is Rashaad Penny going 97 yards to the house in the first week of the season against University of San Diego.
This South Alabama team reminds me of the North Dakota State University team who we beat 49 to 41 back in 2012. They also remind me of the Eastern Illinois team that smoked us at home 40 to 19 back in 2013. San Diego State will need to be on their game to win this game. South Alabama is coming into this game under the radar. I completely disagree with the odds for the game of SDSU by 15 1/2. South Alabama has major play makers. Two big play WR’s who both have catches of 50+ yards or more so far this season. As you will read in the South Alabama section of this preview Josh Magee beat the Nebraska pass defense on multiple plays. I expect him to target Malik Smith. They also have a good running back in Xavier Johnson who is averaging over 10 yards per carry.

The three players to look out for would be QB Cody Clements, RB Xavier Johnson and WR Josh Magee. Clements has completed 37 of 65 passes for 455 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson has had 14 carries for 141 yards and one touchdown. Magee has 7 receptions for 158 yards and one touchdown.Taking a look at the national rankings listed at the top of the article Southern Alabama is a mediocre football team.
Southern Alabama is going to need to shut down the Aztecs running game if they wish to win this game. They will want to force San Diego State to throw the football. Offensively Southern Alabama will want to keep the ball away from the SDSU Defensive backs. The SDSU Secondary is the best in the Mountain West Conference. The smart play would be to throw underneath the secondary for 5- to 7- yard gains or throw deep. Southern Alabama has two deep threats at wide receiver Magee and Gerald Everett. Both receivers have had one 50 +yard reception this season. CAL was able to beat San Diego State deep by going after Malik Smith for a 75 yard TD pass. If I am Southern Alabama I am going to challenge Smith to stop us.
