Q&A with Derek Ochiai on MSU Freshman Jalen Watts-Jackson Injury

Michigan State Football freshman, Jalen Watts-Jackson broke his hip Saturday when he was tackled in the end zone. It was reported by a Michigan State spokesperson that his hip injury occurred during a celebration in the end zone where his teammates (out of excitement) charged him and ended up in a pile on top of him. Watts-Jackson had hip surgery on Sunday to repair the fractured hip.

David: What is the prognosis for this surgery and will he be able to play the remainder of the season?

Derek: He will not be able to play this season. Hopefully, he makes a full recovery, but this is a severe injury. There is a chance for increased stiffness and pain in the hip, even after successful surgery.

David: How frequently do hip injuries like Jackson’s happen.

Derek: This injury is FAR LESS frequent than knee injuries, such as ACL tears.

David: What is the recovery time for an injury like Jackson’s.

Derek: Typically, weight bearing is limited for about three months. With proper rehabilitation afterwards, in all likelihood he will be ready to play next season, barring complications.

David: Do you think college football should institute a rule to protect against these types of injuries during celebrations (AKA like MLB)?

Derek: First, it is unclear when he dislocated his hip (either with the tackle or the celebratory scrum). Given that this is such a rare injury, I feel it would be a mistake to overreact and ban this type of celebration (football players have a lot more protective padding and equipment than MLB players).
