Gulls Ice Hockey: Back at Home- Protected the Nest
The Gulls beat the Stockton heat 3-2 (SO) in their first matchup of the season, with tremendous goalkeeping by both John Gibson and Matthew Hackett.
John Gibson played for the first two periods, and made tremendous saves, further showing that he is in fact the best Goalie in the League. With about 5 minutes left in the 2nd period, Gibson was injured but remained in the game, completely distraught. He did allow one goal, and the injury did eventually force him out of the game. Matthew Hackett took the reigns from the injured Gibson, going 13 for 14 on saves. He made tremendous saves in both overtime and blocked all 4 shooters shots in the shootout. Nick Ritchie, the teams leading scorer (5), struck first in the second period, and Max Friberg (2), the Swede and former leading scorer for Norfolk, added the second in the second. The Gulls did not play from behind at all, and finished off strong, with a shootout goal by Mike Sgarbossa.

Injury- no information disclosed. Appear to be a possible hand injury or groin/leg. More updates to come
In the first period, the Gulls looked as if they were still sloppy from last week, committing or being called for horrendous penalties. At one point we had 3 in the box and the Heat had a 5 on 3 for 2:00. John Gibson, the brick wall in net, made several great saves in this time span, including 2 breakaways. However, penalties died down, all though the Gulls were often on the penalty kill.
Attendance sat at 7,152, and 3 home games in, we are leading the league in average attendance with 9,620. However, tonights game will likely see a drop due to parental priorities, so look for some after market tickets for cheaper than usual for tonight, 10/31. Also Tuesday 11//3 will be the following matchup, and attendance in midweek games is yet to be seen, but will likely be substantially lower. Get out to a game and support the Gulls, the Hershey Bears or Ontario Reign are likely to steal our attendance crown, so lets show some support for our up and coming stars!
