Press Release: Chargers make roster moves
The San Diego Chargers placed wide receiver Keenan Allen, running back Branden Oliver and linebacker Tourek Williams on season-ending “Reserve-Injured,” the team announced Tuesday.
Off to one of the best receiving starts in NFL history, Allen’s season ends due to a kidney injury suffered during last Sunday’s game in Baltimore. He currently ranks second in the NFL with 67 catches, a total that is tied with Rod Smith for the third-most catches in the first eight games of a season in NFL history. Allen was on pace for a 134-catch season, which would have shattered the team record of 100 set by LaDainian Tomlinson in 2003. Allen’s start to the 2015 season also included three games (Detroit, at Minnesota and at Green Bay) in which he had at least 12 catches as he became the first player in NFL history with at least 12 catches in three of his team’s first six games. Allen ranked third in the NFL with 725 yards receiving and he caught four touchdown passes.
Oliver suffered a toe injury during the Chargers’ game at Baltimore last Sunday. He finishes the 2015 season with 220 total offensive yards, including 108 rushing and 112 receiving. Oliver also averaged 24.6 yards per return on eight kickoff returns (197 yards).
Williams missed the first eight games of the season while recovering from a broken bone in his foot, suffered during the Chargers’ Aug. 13 preseason opener vs. the Dallas Cowboys.
Allen, Oliver and Williams will be replaced on the team’s active roster by wide receiver Javontee Herndon, cornerback Greg Ducre and center J.D. Walton.
Herndon (6-0, 194) and Ducre (5-10, 183) were both signed from the practice squad where they’ve spent the better part of the last two seasons after each joining the team originally as undrafted rookie free agents in 2014. Ducre, who attended the University of Washington, spent time with the Washington Redskins last season, appearing in five games. Herndon joined the Bolts in 2014 from the University of Arkansas.
Walton (6-3, 305) spent four weeks with the Chargers earlier this season, seeing action in one game. He was signed on Sept. 29 and released Oct. 27. Besides the Chargers, Walton has spent time with Denver, Washington and the New York Giants.
Herndon wears No. 8, Ducre wears No. 33 and Walton wears No. 66.
