Padres Set To Hire Mark McGwire as Bench Coach
San DIego- AJ Preller and new Manager Andy Greene continue to fill out the MLB staff with the Hiring of former St. Luis Cardinals slugger Mark McGwire as their new Bench Coach. Dennis LIn of the San Diego Union Tribune first reported that the former Los Angeles Dodgers hitting coach was in talks to take over the position.
Before being hired by the Dodgers as hitting coach, he served in the same position for the Cardinals until 2012.
In 16 big league seasons, McGwire slugged 583 home runs and broke Roger Maris’s single-season home run record in 1998 with 70. That record would stand until 2001 when Barry Bonds would hit 73 over the course of the season with the San Francisco Giants.
McGwire was a career .263 hitter over 16 years with the Oakland Athletics and St. Luis Cardinals. In 2010, after years of denial, he finally admitted he had used steroids throughout his major league career.
He replaces Dave Roberts, who spent the previous two seasons as Bud Black and Pat Murphy’s bench coach. The Dodgers announced Monday morning that Roberts would replace Don Mattingly as manager with an official press conference to be scheduled after the Thanksgiving holiday.
