SDSU Basketball: Las Vegas Invitational Championship Preview
The San Diego State Aztecs will face West Virginia in the championship game of the Las Vegas Invitational at 7:30 pm on Fox Sports One. The Aztecs will enter Friday night’s game as the underdog against West Virginia. The starting five for the Aztecs will be Jeremy Hemsley, Trey Kell, Dakarai Allen, Zylan Cheatham and Angelo Chol. The players to watch in Wednesday’s game for SDSU are Jeremy Hemsley, Dakarai Allen and Winston Shepard. Hemsley enters the game against WVU averaging 13.7 points and 3.2 rebounds and leads the team in assists averaging 2.6 in 6 games this season. Shepard enters the game against WVU averaging 10.8 points and 6.2 rebounds in 6 games this season. Allen enters the game against WVU averaging 10.2 points and 3.8 rebounds in 6 games this season.
The Aztecs are still trying to improve with shooting from the floor and behind the arc. The Aztecs are shooting 42% from the floor and 33% from behind the arc. The Aztecs need major improvement in the free throw game but have improved their free throw shooting average to 68.7%. The Aztecs have also been working harder this season on offensive and defensive rebounds. To date the Aztecs have outrebounded opponents 244 to 205. The Aztecs are looking to crack into the AP Top 25 this coming weekend if they can get the victory over West Virginia after defeating No. 14 California last night. San Diego State’s opponents has been averaging a field goal percentage of just 35% and 34% from beyond the arc. The Aztecs have been bringing press on opponents this season thanks to a very deep bench. This has allowed the Aztecs to use the full court press for a majority of every game. Opponents also have to practice playing against the Aztecs dreaded 1-3-1 and 2-3 zone. Expect San Diego State use eight men tonight even though the Aztecs carry 10.

The player to watch in Friday’s game for West Virginia are Devin Williams, Jevon Carter, Daxter Miles Jr. and Jaysean Paige. Williams enters the game against SDSU averaging 19 points and 11.4 rebounds in 5 games this season. Carter enters the game against SDSU averaging 14.2 points, 2 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 5 games this season. Miles Jr. enters the game against SDSU averaging 12.2 points and 2.6 rebounds in 5 games this season. Paige enters the game against SDSU averaging 10.2 points and 3.4 rebounds in 5 games this season.
