San Diego State (9-3) and Conf (8-0)

This game preview will start with an injury report. San Diego State Senior QB Maxwell Smith was injured in last weekends game against Nevada. He came out of the game early on and did not come back in. Smith has a torn ACL and is done for the season. He has played what could be his last college football game. Redshirt freshman Christian Chapman took over for Smith and is now the projected starter for the Aztecs in this Mountain West Championship game. The three players to look out for would be QB Christian Chapman, RB Donnel Pumphrey and WR Mikah Holder. Chapman, the redshirt freshman, has completed 12 of 24 passes for 120 yards. Pumphrey has had 268 carries for 1464 yards and 16 touchdowns. Pumphrey is also leading the Aztecs in receptions with 25 receptions for 333 yards and 2 touchdowns. So far this season Holder has 22 receptions for 377 yards and 5 touchdowns. The San Diego State defense is going to tell us who wins this game. The Aztec defense has forced 31 turnovers to lead the NATION (20 Interceptions and 11 Fumbles) in 12 games this season. The Aztec defense has been unstoppable and is now ranked 5th in the nation in total defense. We have included the three best hits to date.

Special teams will play a huge role in this game. The edge this week will definitely go to San Diego State. Here is Rashaad Penny going 97 yards to the house in the first week of the season against University of San Diego. This is one of two kick return touchdowns for Rashaad Penny. Penny is tied with Aztec Alum Colin Lockett for most kick return touchdowns in a single season. Penny has 19 kick returns for an average 32.5 yards per return and a total of 617 yards.

Also, the Aztecs have a weapon in field goal kicker Donny Hageman who nailed  two 54-yard field goals (University of Southern Alabama and Colorado State). Hageman is 15 for 20 this year on field goals and is 48/48 on extra points. Hageman is second on the team in overall points scored.

Air Force (8-4) and Conf (6-2)

The three players to look out for would be QB Karson Roberts, RB Jacobi Owens and WR Garrett Brown. Roberts has completed 65 of 123 passes for 1411 yards and 9 touchdowns. Owens has had 170 carries for 857 yards and 6 touchdowns. Brown has 26 receptions for 534 yards and 1 touchdown. From the national rankings listed at the top of the article, it is apparent that Air Force is a good team. Air Force is going to need to shut down the Aztecs’ running game and be able to run on the Aztec defense if they wish to win this game. They will want to force San Diego State to throw the football more so now than ever. Offensively Air Force will want to keep the ball away from the SDSU defensive backs who had two more interceptions last week against Nevada. The SDSU secondary is the best in the Mountain West Conference according to preseason rankings. The smart play would be to throw underneath the secondary for 5- to 7- yard gains or throw deep. Expect both teams to run the ball just like last weekends’ game against Nevada. The team who holds onto time of possession should win this game.
