Padres Enjoy an Active Week

San Diego– The San Diego Padres have finally made some headlines during what has been a relatively quiet off-season headed toward the 2016 MLB season.

After struggling to get anything resembling production out of the shortstop position for the last few seasons, the Padres agreed on a 1-year contract with 2014 All Star SS Alexei Ramirez. The 34 year-old has signed on to be a place holder while the club’s No. 3 prospect, Javier Guerra, gains more experience in the minors.

Ramirez struggled to begin the 2015 campaign, but rebounded nicely hitting .277/.325/.432 to go along with 8 home runs and 35 rbi through 70 games during the second half of the season.

Ramirez has been incredibly durable the previous six seasons, playing in at least 154 games each year.

To go along with two silver slugger awards (2010, 2014), Ramirez was an All Star in 2014 and finished second in the Rookie of the Year balloting in 2008 behind Evan Longoria.

The deal is unofficial until the club announces Ramirez has passed his physical.

In addition to the Ramirez signing, the Padres have avoided arbitration with all club eligible players, reaching agreements with Drew Pomeranz ($1.35 million), Derek Norris ($2.925 million), Tyson Ross ($9.625 million), and Andrew Cashner ($7.15 million).
