SDSU Basketball: Aztecs vs. Wolfpack (Game Preview)
The San Diego State Aztecs will travel to Mountain West foe Nevada tonight for an 8:00 pm tipoff at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nevada.The Aztecs (14-6 & 7-0) will enter Tuesday night’s game as the favorite against Nevada (12-7 & 4-3). The Aztecs are 5-0 against the Wolfpack since they entered the Mountain West in 2012/13. The players to watch in Tuesday’s game for SDSU are Jeremy Hemsley, Trey Kell, Zylan Cheatham and Winston Shepard. Hemsley enters the game against UNR averaging 13.1 points and 2.8 rebounds and leads the team in assists averaging 2.25 in 20 games this season. Kell enters the game against UNR averaging 10.4 points and 3.9 rebounds in 20 games this season. Shepard enters the game against UNR averaging 10.1 points and 5.9 rebounds in 19 games this season. Cheatham enters the game against UNR averaging 8.8 points and 5.9 rebounds in 20 games this season.
The Aztecs are still trying to improve with shooting from the floor and behind the arc. The Aztecs are shooting 41.8% from the floor and 30.5% from behind the arc. The Aztecs need major improvement in the free throw game but have improved their free throw shooting average to 68.4%. The Aztecs have also been working harder this season on offensive and defensive rebounds. To date the Aztecs have outrebounded opponents 777 to 669. San Diego State’s opponents has been averaging a field goal percentage of just 36.5% and 31.1% from beyond the arc. The Aztecs have been bringing press on opponents this season thanks to a very deep bench. This has allowed the Aztecs to use the full court press for a majority of every game. Opponents also have to practice playing against the Aztecs dreaded 1-3-1 and 2-3 zone. Expect San Diego State use eight men tonight even though the Aztecs carry 10.
The Wolfpack are coming off the biggest win of the season against in state rival UNLV. The Wolfpack have some height on their team with Elijah Foster (6-7), Leland King (6-7), Jordan Caroline (6-7), Cameron Oliver (6-8), Sam Williams (6-8), Kaileb Rodriguez (6-9), and Lucas Stivrins (6-11). The players to watch in Tuesday’s game for Nevada are Marqueze Coleman, D.J. Fenner, Cameron Oliver and Tyron Criswell. Marqueze Coleman enters the game against SDSU averaging 17.6 points and 4.4 rebounds in 19 games this season. D.J. Fenner enters the game against SDSU averaging 12.5 points and 4.6 rebounds in 19 games this season. Cameron Oliver enters the game against SDSU averaging 11.1 points and 7.2 rebounds in 19 games this season. Tyron Criswell enters the game against SDSU averaging 11.0 points and 6.1 rebounds in 19 games this season.
