Chargers appoint Fred Maas as Special Advisor to stadium initiative project
The San Diego Chargers announced Monday the appointment of Fred Maas as Special Advisor to Chargers’ Chairman Dean Spanos. Maas, the former Chairman of San Diego’s Centre City Development Corporation, will advise Spanos and the Chargers on the Citizen’s Initiative process, including the exploration of possible stadium financing plans that would be publicly acceptable, the drafting of the initiative document, and the creation of the campaign infrastructure necessary to give the Citizens’ Initiative the best possible chance of success. Maas will be working closely with an established team of legal, financial and land-use advisors.
Fredric Maas is currently the President and Managing Director of MRV Systems LLC, a manufacturer of marine robotic vehicles for the oceanographic, intelligence and defense industries and is the Founder and CEO of Pacific EcoCompanies LLC, an investment and advisory firm focused on clean technologies and sustainable development. He previously served as a principal in the real estate and land development business. In that capacity, he was a partner at Potomac Sports Properties, exclusive developer of the PGA TOUR’s Tournament Player Club communities, and was the developer of Black Mountain Ranch in the city of San Diego, site of the Santaluz and Del Sur neighborhoods. He also served as the Chairman and CEO of the Centre City Development Corporation, downtown San Diego’s redevelopment arm, for several years during its tenure, and served as Mayor Jerry Sanders advisor on a downtown sports and entertainment district. For the past 30 years, he has served as a consultant and advisor to numerous political campaigns for federal, state and local offices.
About the San Diego Chargers:
The San Diego Chargers originated as the Los Angeles Chargers of the American Football League in 1960. The team relocated to San Diego in 1961 and captured the American Football League championship in 1963. The Chargers finished first in five of their 10 AFL seasons. Since joining the National Football League when the two leagues merged in 1970, the Chargers have won 11 AFC West division titles. Overall, the team has played in 28 playoff games, including Super Bowl XXIX following the 1994 season. Most recently, over the last 12 seasons (2004-15), the Chargers have won five division titles and had just two losing seasons.
Construction leader and real estate developer Alex G. Spanos purchased the team in 1984 and his son Dean Spanos took over the reins of the team in 1994. Dean’s sons, A.G. and John, were named President-Business Operations and President-Football Operations, respectively, in 2015. The Spanos family is nationally renowned as one of San Diego’s and the NFL’s most philanthropic families. The family has contributed millions of dollars and endless support to deserving civic, social and non-profit organizations. In addition, millions of dollars also have been invested in an effort to secure a modern, Super Bowl-quality stadium for San Diego.
