Williams joins the Chargers from the University of South Dakota where he coached from 2012-15, including 2015 as the Coyotes’ special teams coordinator. Williams also coached outside linebackers and the defensive line at South Dakota and in 2012 linebacker Tyler Starr, now a member of the Atlanta Falcons, was named the Missouri Valley Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year. A native of Fresno, California, Williams was a defensive back at Fresno City College and University of Mary in North Dakota. Williams began his coaching career in 2010 at Winona State before moving on to Central Oklahoma in 2011 and South Dakota in 2012. In 2013, he was invited to participate in the NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship program with the Chicago Bears and in 2014 the Bears invited him back to serve as a coaching intern. During both stints in Chicago, Williams worked closely with Special Teams Coordinator Joe DeCamillis. In 2015, Williams completed a similar internship with the Detroit Lions.

Rees is a former Notre Dame quarterback who played for the Irish from 2010-13. Several of his former Notre Dame teammates now play for the Chargers, including centers Trevor Robinson and Chris Watt, and inside linebacker Manti Te’o. Rees started for the Irish as a sophomore and a senior, throwing for 2,871 yards and 20 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2011, and 3,257 yards with 27 touchdowns as a senior. Rees signed with the Washington Redskins in 2014 but was released by the team during its rookie mini camp. In December 2014, Rees joined Pat Fitzgerald’s coaching staff at Northwestern University as an offensive graduate assistant. In 2015, the Wildcats went 10-3 and finished the year ranked No. 23 in the final Associated Press Top-25 poll.
