The Aztecs are still trying to improve with shooting from the floor and behind the arc. The Aztecs are shooting 41.3% from the floor and 30.5% from behind the arc. The Aztecs need major improvement in the free throw game but have improved their free throw shooting average to 69.5%. The Aztecs have also been working harder this season on offensive and defensive rebounds. To date the Aztecs have outrebounded opponents 954 to 805. San Diego State’s opponents has been averaging a field goal percentage of just 36.3% and 30.4% from beyond the arc. The Aztecs have been bringing press on opponents this season thanks to a very deep bench. This has allowed the Aztecs to use the full court press for a majority of every game. Opponents also have to practice playing against the Aztecs dreaded 1-3-1 and 2-3 zone. Expect San Diego State use eight men tonight even though the Aztecs carry 10.
The 2nd most noteable streak in San Diego State basketball ended last season with a loss at Fresno State 59 to 57. Before to the loss at Fresno State the Aztecs had won 47 straight games against schools from the great state of California. This will be the first time that SDSU has played at FS since losing that game. That should give the Aztecs some extra fire because they are going to need it. The Bulldogs of Fresno State took the Aztecs to overtime this past January 19th, 2016, which put “The Streak” in danger of ending. The Aztecs were able to pull that game out in the end 73 to 67. This is a trap game for the Aztecs they must go into Fresno State and crush them.
The Bulldogs have some height on their team with Paul Watson (6-7), Nate Grimes (6-8), Torren Jones (6-9), Cullen Russo (6-9) and Terrell Carter II (6-10). The players to watch in tonight’s game for Fresno State are Marvelle Harris, Torren Jones, and Karachi Edo. Please keep in mind these are MW Conference Stats. The Fresno State website does not have full season stats listed. Marvelle Harris enters the game against SDSU averaging 20.5 points and 5.1 rebounds in 14 games this season. Torren Jones enters the game against SDSU averaging 10.1 points and 8.0 rebounds in 13 games this season. Karachi Edo enters the game against SDSU averaging 9.8 points and 7.3 rebounds in 14 games this season.
